Overall Satisfaction with ScreenFlow

We use it get recordings of navigating on our organization's website and Canvas modules for online courses. We are cutting down on the load of student services calls from students, parents, and teachers on how to use the website and the Canvas platform.

Pros

  • Hide/reveal mouse cursor
  • Callouts on parts of the screen
  • Ability to edit within the software
  • Zoom ins at high res

Cons

  • Be able to open working projects in other editing software like Premiere. In cases that editors want that flexibility or someone doesn't have access to ScreenFlow but needs to work on projects that use it
  • Only available for Macs. Some of our teachers have PC and prefer to work on that or used to it. Only reason we switched to another screen recording application
  • Files are huge
  • Ease of use for editors and teachers if on Mac
Sometimes the layout is very simple that it's hard to find some settings or parameters.
I haven't used Camtasia much, but it's the alternative for teachers using PC systems. It seems very popular among the instructors. We have received video exports from Camtasia to edit in Adobe Premiere. Another way we have done screen recordings is a combination of QuickTime Player to record the screen and Adobe Premiere to edit. ScreenFlow has the ability to keep our work within one application.

Do you think ScreenFlow delivers good value for the price?

Not sure

Are you happy with ScreenFlow's feature set?

Yes

Did ScreenFlow live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of ScreenFlow go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy ScreenFlow again?

Yes

Well suited to screen record tutorials on using particular websites, platforms, or software applications. Good for instructional videos.

Less suited for more lecture or webinar type of videos.

Using ScreenFlow

6 - Screen recordings internally for instructors and student services and externally for clients like students, parents, and teachers.
1 - The studio manager provides support for ScreenFlow. He helps set up the software on machines, provides licensing and login information, assists other users, teaches how to use it to instructors who want to record themselves, reaches out to company if assistance is needed, and shares any updates
  • Tutorial on website navigation
  • Instruction on how to go through online courses
  • Teachers in computer programming
  • Zoom ins at high res
  • Ready made call outs
  • Hiding and revealing mouse cursor
  • More instructional videos in programming
  • General videos for parents to help students with online courses
Definitely need it for future recordings

Evaluating ScreenFlow and Competitors

Yes - Quicktime Player. It replaced it as a screen recording application because it had the ability to edit, zoom, hide cursor, and add ready-made callouts for mouse clicks without going into another robust editing software.
  • Integration with Other Systems
  • Ease of Use
Ease of use: We didn't want a huge learning curve if can just continue record with another application and edit as normal in Premiere.
See if all instructors have the access to use it. Not all teachers are using Mac and it would be too much to ask them to switch over or buy them a whole new computer system that they're used to. We prefer they focus on teaching, rather than stumble around a new operating system and new software.
