Whenever you have to access data sources from more than one database engine provider, you should consider using DbVisualizer for the task. Switching between multiples IDE consumes time and resources (memory), and you also need to learn menus, shortcuts, etc., for each IDE, while using DbVisualizer allows you to work consistently no matter which database engine you are connecting. You can use it to simply navigate through data structures, write SQL sentences or even create new tables and views, develop stored procedures, etc.

High Volume data storage and processing is a critical initial use case of Oracle Coherence. Right after data storage, data processing is also handled by the software, i.e.; this includes manipulating data on the go, using cache L1, L2, and L3 levels available, In-memory scaling, fast access to data with RBAC, Scaling web technology applications with High Availability, and Disaster Recovery. Less Appropriate: Low-volume data, less frequent data processing, and applications that do not require high availability or quick response times are not appropriate candidates for Coherence.

Cons
DbVis Software AB
  • When exporting databases to jpg or png image, it should be possible to print banner type without losing quality and legibility
  • Be able to define sections or a set of tables with an identifier of colors that help a better visualization or understanding of large databases
  • Implement a cooperative mode for work teams

  • I can't really come up with too many flaws, but possibly a bit expensive considering there are good open source caches like Ehcache.

Oracle Coherence support team is responsive and knowledgeable. We contacted them to ask a couple of design questions about how we were setting up Oracle Coherence based on how we used IBM's Datapower Extreme Scale. They were able to guide us so that we got the design correct the first time and didn't have to go back and re-architect our design later.

DbVisualizer provides a good value when compared against other 3rd party products with similar features as well as products with similar functionality made by the database vendors. The user interface is good and user friendly / intuitive and easy to learn. It doesn't take too long for an experienced DBA / database developer to come up to speed.

DataSynapse GridServer has the same cache functionality connected with a grid distributed application deployment platform. It provides all the necessary tools to configure and manage these applications. On the otherhand Oracle Coherence has more a flexible configuration and better performance. Also the Oracle configuration and monitoring tools are more convenient and informative than the DataSynapse ones.

Return on Investment
DbVis Software AB
  • The pricing for DbVisualizer is fair.
  • The tool also succeeds in non-functional areas I find important, such as being able to install and/or run without requiring administrator privileges on Windows.
  • Has capability to generate diagrams and models from existing databases which is very helpful in reverse engineering.

  • In my current project, it is yet to be decided as we are on the way to make it live for users. But I am sure it will be an added value to obtain timely calculations.
