Likelihood to Recommend

FL Studio

I would recommend FL Studio for anyone who wants to get their hands on music making or even just recording audio for videos. I would suggest making the somewhat small investment and trying it out, you could end up with a career from it. For beginners I would definitely suggest watching online courses/tutorials as they helped me a lot and it will for you as well. Also, I would recommend using third party plugins which will help in fine tuning your projects and overall produce much better music/recordings.FL Studio is well suited for businesses and personal use to make music. I would confidently say that its one of the best DAW to start making music.

Logic Pro X

We use to LPX to produce "down-and-dirty" musical snippets to serve as soundtracks for short explainer and marketing videos. As these are generally done for the tech industry, the tracks skew towards electronica and don't have to be particularly innovative or unusual sounding. FPX is brilliant for this -- out of the box, the vast collection of instruments and effects make it really easy to just layout cool-enough background music. The "Drummer" feature is especially helpful, as it instantly gives the music a custom drum track. We also do simple sound editing... mostly just timing out voice over and limited sound effects to picture (which you can do in FPX), and mixing it to background music. While FPX might not be the best tool for really complex editing/mixing, is more than adequate for our purposes.

Cons

FL Studio

  • The recording process can somewhat be confusing and inefficient.
  • FL Studio has a confusing routing, for example to use return tracks for reverbs, you will have to click numerous buttons to get that done.
  • FL Studio has a somewhat steep learning curve, which can demotivate beginners.
  • FL Studio's auto-saving feature is a bit late, which can ruin your project if you rely on it.

Logic Pro X

  • Logic Pro X is designed for music editing, so the help documents and videos don't often address my needs--would love tutorials for podcasts
  • It's designed for someone with more technical expertise than I have, so it can be overwhelming at times
  • Would like to color code segments more easily

Like every DAW, it takes some time and getting used to, but Logic's tools and interface just make sense to anyone who is familiar with Apple products and music tools.

Logic Pro X 9.7

The user community of Logic Pro X is vibrant, responsive, and lively. There are many great forums out there where you can solve any problem you encounter, whether it's sound card latency, a certain plugin not working, audio routing, multitrack issues, or virtually anything else you run into. The community is so helpful that I'm giving Logic Pro X a 10 in this department, despite having never contacted their official support department. I've never had to, since there is such a great user community.

Alternatives Considered

FL Studio

In selecting this software, we investigated and considered others. We found that FL Studio had a good price point and the life time free version updates made it a one time purchase.
In terms of functionality, the most similar software solutions are Ableton Live, Logic Pro X and Propellerhead Reason.
Of these the most cost effective for us was Ableton Live and FL Studio with Propellerhead Reason being a slightly different product.
We found that FL studio had a wider feature set and was more suited to our use, where as Ableton Live would be better if live music performance was a requirement, in our case it was not.

Logic Pro X

Logic Pro X is the natural successor to GarageBand. GarageBand is a fantastic app, however, it's fairly rudimentary and doesn't have the robust features that Logic Pro X supports. Pro Tools is more expensive but does similar things to Logic. Thankfully, Logic rests in the middle where the price is affordable, but it allows a wide assortment of tools, along with Apple's reliability of software and support.

Return on Investment

FL Studio

  • It has definitely reduced costs, because it is slightly cheaper than other software.
  • It has decreased the efficiency in workflow because of its poor routing.
  • Has helped me grow by letting me create high quality music.
  • Helps me record high quality audio.

  • The name recognition means directors & producers trust my company.
