Google Cloud Functions vs. Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud

Any sort of transaction or complex logic that is going to take longer than 250ms or accesses resources that are protected by permissions, secrets, etc. is a great use case for a GCF. Some sort of "helper function" associated strictly with the UI inside browser would not be a good application of a GCF. It would not be crazy to create/debug some fairly complicated logic inside the browser/IDE and when perfected package it up as a Google Cloud Function. I have done that many times.

RedHat OpenShift is not only suited for IBM Cloud but can run in ANY cloud. We installed in Azure Cloud, for example. It can also run on Linux servers or a Power 9 machine. It is built for multi-cloud or on-prem environments. IBM support provides such excellent guidance in the installation and configuration that no other product on the market can beat it.

• Multiclick provisioning of resources makes it super easy to manage pods and deployments. We don't have to maintain code for the same
• In built security features and customizability ensures that organization wide standards are integrated well into the containers
• Automated backups, scale ups and fail recovery makes sure of minimal down time

• Needing a zip file is problematic (when wanting to automate deployment for example).
• Requires another solution to execute automatically (ex. cloud scheduler).

• I wish it had better compatibility with docker file syntax. We had issues when it couldn't build standard docker files
• Wish it had better documentation
• Wish they offered fully supported client libraries for the Openshift API rather than dumping it on a 3rd party

The console UI is pretty nasty. Managing various authentication/permissions configurations is just a nightmare. On the other hand, once you are over the hump it's not so bad. AWS Lambda is no better.

Documentation is provided and clear for this service. Although GCP support is included in the current contract we didn't get to use it since the process is pretty straightforward.

It is easier to keep everything in house when we are using GCP or AWS. To mix Lambda with google cloud is not a best practice and will cause problems ahead. The segmentation is clear, if you are using google, you use Google Cloud Functions. if you are on Amazon, you use all AWS tools. You can't mix them. The price is set.

We evaluated a number of potential solutions and ultimately chose Red Hat OpenShift because it was compatible with our existing technology. Time and costs savings have been realized throughout the company since we implemented Red Hat OpenShift, and the IT department has been freed up to focus on activities that are more valuable.
