Oracle Database

I believe that Oracle Database can be used almost on any scenario, starting with small department solutions to actually any enterprise level system. It includes many features that allow a single database to work as an OLTP and Data Warehouse at the same time, reducing hardware requirements and the need to implement ETL or integration solutions between OLTP and DW.

Oracle TimesTen

TimesTen is well suited for applications using smaller data or smaller data stores and where transaction response times are not as business critical. TimesTen is good for applications already accessing Oracle and need to cache data for quick read/write operations. TimesTen is not appropriate for large data dependent applications or applications requiring fast response times. In these cases, using Oracle database or Exadata is better

Cons

Oracle Database

  • Oracle 12c SQL Developer is included with the product for no additional licensing cost, but it is much more limited compared to query tools such as TOAD.
  • Oracle 12c stumbles on certain queries with the optimizer not catching simple methods to return queries very quickly. Often a scalar subquery is required to reduce the time by up to 99%.
  • On occasion, the optimizer can miss simple changes such as IN ('1','2','3') working but BETWEEN '1' AND '3' being stuck in an infinite loop.

Oracle TimesTen

  • Provide better monitoring tools of TimesTen daemon, servers and connections.
  • Improved support for APIs. The libraries lack the necessary code for applications to customize for applications using TimesTen.

Many of the powerful options can be auto-configured but there are still many things to take into account at the moment of installing and configuring an Oracle Database, compared with SQL Server or other databases. At the same time, that extra complexity allows for detailed configuration and guarantees performance, scalability, availability and security.

The product is very good but when you need help it's very difficult. Oracle must have a database with all the customers' configuration so we don't lose a lot of time answering questions. We finally contract with a premium DBA to solve all our issues.

Alternatives Considered

Oracle Database

Compared to other SQL type databases, Oracle can simply be described as a super-set or an extension of them.As Oracle has not only the features of SQL but also PL/SQL, it is much more feature rich compared to other databases technologies. However, there is no fair way to compared Oracle against MongoDB as their basic principles are on totally different terms.Any application that needs not only the power of storage but automatic manipulation of data dynamically during runtime is definitely a place where Oracle should be used.

Oracle TimesTen

Sybase does not have an in-memory database until version 15 so TimesTen was ideal for caching data. TimesTen has reliable replication and backing up mechanisms. Oracle takes longer to set up and use for most applications where as TimesTen is a smaller DBMS that is quick and easy to set up and use. TimesTen can connect to Oracle for caching data so using Oracle as a backend makes sense

Oracle TimesTen

  • TimesTen has had a positive impact from a developer's perspective because implementing TimesTen is quick and easy. The benefits of TimesTen can be seen almost instantly. For instance, the application start up time is faster, the data is easy to maintain and the performance is fast for TimesTen clients.
  • TimesTen has had a positive impact for the business because it can be made accessible to users via a GUI. This gives users transparency to the data at any time.
  • The negative impact is that once the TimesTen database has grown too large, the application should move to using Oracle database or else it suffers from performance degradation and stability issues.
