DataCore Software

Now that you have virtualized your server's CPU and memory resources, you should look to do the same for your storage. Separation of hardware and software has many added benefits not only for CPUs and memory but for storage as well. Without this solution, we would not have been able to afford black-box type SANs at every location. This allowed us to virtualize over 90% of the server environment saving costs and power consumption/cooling and provides all the features costly black-box SANs, including true-HA (which most SAN vendors don't have). Migration from variant SAN storage and using mixed back-end storage solutions is as easier than ever before because the storage being virtualized.

StarWind

StarWind Virtual SAN just works. It does exactly what it's meant to do, and we haven't needed to touch the management console since it was set up due to the fact it just works perfectly. It's the most reliable SAN system we have used to date. We would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new SAN/Virtual SAN.

Pros

DataCore Software

  • Fast pools should go to your most used data, and not static files.
  • Redundancy is a must for all aspects of our IT jobs. Who wants to explain when there's no data?
  • Works on Windows server 2012/2016 much better. Solid stability.

StarWind

  • StarWind Virtual SAN helps in reliably synchronizing in a 2-node cluster via a reliable heartbeat (384 days uptime so far)
  • Ample boost is provided through L1 (RAM) and L2 (SSD) Cache Partition with industry leading bandwidth
  • Fantastic Forum Support and even better mail support, as well as up-to-date documentation helped us in setting up StarWind Virtual SAN within 48 hours and bringing it online within 3 days after setup and initial full syncronization
  • Avoiding a full sync through its fast sync technology: When running maintenance on the cluster, StarWind Virtual SAN reliably synchronizes data in the background when e.g. restarting the service
  • Full utilization of our bandwidth: We use 2x 25GBit for Sync Interface and 2x 10GBit for end user interface and reach a file transfer performance of over 750MB/s through a Windows Fileserver VM

Cons

DataCore Software

  • Our needs are very small when compared to what this product can do. We don't use all of what it is capable of doing. Honestly, I have no cons.

StarWind

  • One downside to Starwind's VSAN is probably their scalability. If we needed to add more nodes for compute power, or scale out storage significantly, that might be a problem. We're a small shop though, and thought out our initial design to last us through at least 6-8 years of growth. Our general trajectory has us outsourcing more and more services instead of hosting them, so I'm not terribly worried about that. If we ever outgrow this solution, I'm pretty sure it will be well after the expected lifetime of our hardware.
  • The re-synchronization times after a full power outage are very long (4-6) hours. That does not impact our ability to get back up and running quickly off of one node, however.
  • The documentation was thorough, with the small exception of incomplete info regarding all of the iSCSI connections required.

It gives us the ability to grow our business without additional costs on hardware. We use only upfront costs and no other costs on the go. It gives us reliability, simplicity in setting up, and freedom to use hardware from different vendors. For all this reasons, we could renew in the future.

VSA with starwind has been deployed since 3 years ago with no issues, great on monitoring it everyday with the management console, great I/O based on other solutions as it can use SSD drives as cache memory for the storage deployed, also great support from starwing engineers, fast response and good technical explanation when asking technical questions

In the 3 years I have been running this, I have contacted support around 4 or 5 times and that was for minor questions with exception of one time when I was performing an update on the system. And in that one time, they were very timely in assisting me with correcting the problem. Top notch customer support!

I worked with the StarWind Virtual SAN support team on a couple of different occasions during the process. For starters, when my Hyper-Converged Appliance arrived, StarWind support walked me through setting up the virtual appliance. The second time that I worked with them was when I was having trouble with the restart procedure for the server. They were able to guide me through the process and point me to where the process was documented. I used this when writing up procedures for my end client. I can say that on both occasions, the support calls were scheduled promptly, and the supporting technicians were competent and knowledgeable. I have no negative comments regarding StarWind Support.

Overall the setup was easy, we did require some help from the technical support team but other than that, we followed all of StarWinds prerequisites and everything else just fell nicely into place with hardly any downtime. The downtime was only due to moving VMs from our previous cluster over to the new StarWind storage cluster.

      Alternatives Considered

      DataCore Software

DataCore is far easier to manage as well as deal with when it comes to hardware (as DataCore works with any hardware). It also seems way more affordable.

      StarWind

StarWind in our experience has a better pricing service and customer support. Additionally, only 2 host machines are required to setup the VSAN compared to 3 machines minimum recommended by VMware vSAN. This allowed us to save money on the licensing costs, hardware costs, and had amazing support compared to our experience with vmware.

      Return on Investment

      DataCore Software

      • More uptime - Typical SANs have redundant controllers, redundant power supply's and can make the drives redundant by leveraging RAID-0, 5, 6, and 10. The claim to be HA but they are not. That is because if I spay water all over them or catch the SAN on fire, the storage will go down. With DataCore's solution we have identical systems (maybe even at different datacenters connected with long-haul-fiber) including duplicate storage. So one side of the solution can totally be taken offline by water, fire, etc. and the other side will remain up providing true-HA storage. Because of this, we can upgrade the SANs during the day and still keep storage services running (zero-downtime).
      • Lower Costs - Ability to use 3rd party hardware which lowers the costs, not only for the initial investment but as storage capacity grows.
      • All the features one can want - High Availability, Thin Provisioning, Asynchronous and Synchronous mirroring/replication, snap-shotting, continues data protection, deduplication, storage reporting, trending with graphs, centralized console for easier management and many more.

      • StarWind was a massive upgrade to our previous SAN environment in terms of cost, physical space required, and ease of management. I do not know how it compares to its peers, but it saved us a lot of headaches compared to what we had.
