Now that you have virtualized your server's CPU and memory resources, you should look to do the same for your storage. Separation of hardware and software has many added benefits not only for CPUs and memory but for storage as well. Without this solution, we would not have been able to afford black-box type SANs at every location. This allowed us to virtualize over 90% of the server environment saving costs and power consumption/cooling and provides all the features costly black-box SANs, including true-HA (which most SAN vendors don't have). Migration from variant SAN storage and using mixed back-end storage solutions is as easier than ever before because the storage being virtualized.

StarWind Virtual SAN

From our experience, StarWind Virtual SAN is suitable for any environment, big or small. From hosting just a few virtual machines to 100's. If you do not want to be locked into an environment, or a particular set or brand of hardware and you want to have control over your environment, then StarWind is an ideal fit. We can't think of any environment where StarWind would not be suitable. The fact that you can take any server and turn it into a virtual SAN with just a few clicks is a no-brainer. With a decent and well-configured network behind StarWind, and with the addition of many nodes to run StarWind, performance can be tremendously improved along with uptime.

Pros

SANsymphony

  • Speed is remarkable.
  • Easy to allocate data space needs.
  • Very easy to administrate.
  • Customer assistance is fantastic.

StarWind Virtual SAN

  • Excellent pre/post sales support. We felt like we could approach the company with any issue.
  • After implementation the solution has been very low-touch, meaning that we don't need to devote valuable resources towards keeping the solution running. This is ideal for the SMB/SME market.
  • StarWind have been in the business for many years and their focus is on storage solutions. This provided us with reassurance that the solution will continue to exist and be supported in the future.
  • We scheduled an interactive validation/tuning session before we went live. We found this to be very valuable and it proved to us how much the company is invested in their product.

Cons

SANsymphony

  • The only area I see lacking with DataCore is their support. It's not very good at all, and it's frankly, very frustrating and has almost caused me to swear off the product. With that said, the product itself (especially when working) is developed and runs very well and because of that, I will keep using it.

StarWind Virtual SAN

  • It would be a nice feature if the virtual disks could automatically enter maintenance mode when one of the nodes is shutting down.
  • Some of the networking portion of the setup isn't straightforward, it would be helpful if the GUI recommended some best practices.

StarWind Virtual SAN has been a game-changer for us. It's far less headache than our previous SAN. It just works. It's cost-effective. When it's time to replace our hardware, we will continue to use StarWind Virtual SAN to support our entire organization.

In the 3 years I have been running this, I have contacted support around 4 or 5 times and that was for minor questions with exception of one time when I was performing an update on the system. And in that one time, they were very timely in assisting me with correcting the problem. Top notch customer support!

Super responsive at all hours of the day. Even the tier 1 support is very very capable and gets the problem resolved. They are very knowledgeable about the product and you can tell they know what they are doing from the way they ask and react to information.

Alternatives Considered

SANsymphony

Since it's running on Windows, it's very easy to understand and get ready to work. Simple concept, great UI, very straightforward. Since it's running on Windows, it will require more updates and patching than a Linux based Virtual SAN.It requires a Windows license in addition to the DataCore license.I only tied it on Hyper-V, don't know about VMware, but I bet that it works fine as well.

StarWind Virtual SAN

I like that StarWind Virtual SAN allows for heterogeneous hardware and not tied to one specific platform like Nutanix. In other words, we can use Dell or HP, or any other name brand with the proper specs to meet the basic criteria for a proper StarWind Configuration with Fast NVME drives and fast 10g network cards.

Return on Investment

  • Very positive. We get requests to be added to the SAN.
  • Don't have to think about it. Solid stability.

StarWind Virtual SAN

  • Allowed us to take a SAN that would only ever be used in the event of a failure and begin actively utilizing that hardware for production.
  • This resulted in being able to sustain a complete site failure without any need for a manual disaster recovery procedure.
