Scality

The team in charge of implementing Scality has to be full stack in order to guarantee the correct functioning of the entire system. However, you have to think very carefully about the balance between servers and disks, perhaps adopting smaller fully populated servers instead of large semi-populated servers, which would mean that over time our disk updates will not have a fully useful life.

I would definitely prefer to use this solution for smaller projects. The cost savings and the ability to take a very limited amount of rack space provide a few benefits. I was able to install the new unit in the same rack as the one that was being replaced and run them in parallel during the changeover process so that a rollback would be easy in the event of any issues.

Pros

Scality

  • I love the redundancy of the software.

StarWind

  • Their documentation for initial configuration and setup, while not necessarily 100% thorough, is as good or better than any I've seen. I got through 99% of the setup with a very good understanding of the config concepts and actual real world configuration for our particular environment. Their support was also very helpful in validating our network and node-to-node connectivity design plan. Once our design plan was vetted, it didn't take more than a couple of days to be fully up and running.
  • Our Starwind VSAN has been bullet proof. We've had ZERO issues with it since it's been built out almost 4 years ago. This is not an exaggeration. I find it almost ridiculous that it's been so rock-solid. Re-synchronization times between nodes after full power outages are lengthy, but I think that is a small price to pay, and it has never impacted our ability to get back up and running quickly.
  • Ongoing maintenance for the VSAN is next to nil. Aside from the periodic Starwind updates, and maybe checking re-sync after full outages, I almost never have to even think about Starwind. It's just there, and it works.

Cons

Scality

  • The overall packaging is not very good. I think it could be more efficient for installation.
  • There are many components in storage servers. This can generally be complex to understand, you have to be patient.

  • I once had to get emergency 24-hour support added on. I paid for the support (a yearly rate) but it was only good until the next renewal (so just for a couple of months.) That wasn't great. That kind of support should be pro-rated or permitted to carry over.

Unfortunately it would be apparently that our customers are requiring tighter integration with existing vendors. As vSAN was a single use case, selected to address and specific problem , it is unlikely we will have the opportunity to use it in the future.

As an organization, it took us a while to understand the shift from a traditional black box SAN to software-defined storage, but now we are much more certain of what this means. The time invested and the resources were not very high, thanks on the one hand to the technical support and on the other to the coherence and good development of the platform.

VSA with starwind has been deployed since 3 years ago with no issues, great on monitoring it everyday with the management console, great I/O based on other solutions as it can use SSD drives as cache memory for the storage deployed, also great support from starwing engineers, fast response and good technical explanation when asking technical questions

We ran into some problems setting up our hyper-converged 2 node Failover-cluster. After many unsuccessful tries our Trial licence had expired. So we contacted support via Email and got an answer within 5 minutes. They just gave us longer trial to figure out if we can use Starwind Virtual SAN for our application

      Alternatives Considered

      Scality

Due to the nature of our business we require extensive encryption and availability for sensitive customer data. The erasure encoding that Scality provides gives us the assurance that documents are rest are never in a state of being downloaded or available to a casual data thief. This is something that can be found with other vendors but at a fraction of the same cost. Having this kind of performance, availability and redundancy at the cost that Scality provides has made a large difference to our organization.

      StarWind

StarWind in our experience has a better pricing service and customer support. Additionally, only 2 host machines are required to setup the VSAN compared to 3 machines minimum recommended by VMware vSAN. This allowed us to save money on the licensing costs, hardware costs, and had amazing support compared to our experience with vmware.

      Return on Investment

      Scality

      • Keeping sensitive customer data secure is a must for our organization and Scality has great features to make this happen.
      • We replaced a single SAN with a Scality ring and found performance to improve as we store more and more customer data.
      • Being able to lose various portions of our Scality ring and allow it to continue to service customers while maintaining high performance has been key to our business.

      StarWind

      • We saved on the initial implementation in comparison to what we were going to pay prior to implementing StarWind.
      • Has improved our performance across all virtual machines.
      • On several occasions, we have run out of storage, and adding new storage racks, or introducing new nodes to the cluster has saved us time and money.
      • We have met our internal SLA's every year for the last 6 years.
