Likelihood to Recommend

SourceForge

SourceForge is a hub of organic reviews from users of all domains. These reviews help us in making key decisions for the software and tools we purchase for our company use. We depend on SourceForge heavily and rely especially on user reviews and their experiences with the respective tools before making our purchase decision.

Visual SourceSafe (Discontinued)

I would not recommend Visual SourceSafe to anyone out there as there are so many better, more modern solutions that do what it does and much more. Visual SourceSafe should be retired in most cases.

Pros

SourceForge

  • Finding and comparing software prices, which is especially useful for businesses.
  • Searching for and downloading open-source software for any purpose.
  • An easy portal to search for rival software and what users are saying about them. It helps better analyze your own products and is quite helpful for making reports.

Visual SourceSafe (Discontinued)

  • At this point in its lifecycle there are not many things VSS does well
  • Its main strength would be its ability to be self contained on a local drive
  • It is a basic Code repository

Cons

SourceForge

  • I don’t really have many cons to speak of. There were some features lacking early on, like searching by integration or service region, but those have been taken care of now.
  • I would like to be able to save my searches and comparisons, so that I could come back and reference them later, but it’s not a huge deal.
  • There are a couple of features I don't understand.

Visual SourceSafe (Discontinued)

  • The system stability could be improved. Often we get file corrupted errors.
  • The User Interface is not modern and not user-friendly.
  • Concurrent check-outs could be added, allowing more people to work on the same file at the same time.
  • Add conflict resolution, files comparison, blame file, features that any modern source control program should have.

The current status of Visual SourceSafe is not usable. There are many things that are just so out of the date that it should be retired and not looked at any longer. If you have an existing application that is stored in it, I'd consider migrating it to a modern tool.

I had a query about its service, for this I contacted them using email. They gave me instant support and provided me a very satisfactory answer to what I needed. The support staff is very friendly and available for support every time. Easy to create tickets, no need to log in.

It's a Microsoft product so the customer support is great. The program has been around a long time so there are plenty of places on line to get assistance. Also almost any development shop you go to will have at least one developer who has used this product extensively in their career.

Alternatives Considered

SourceForge

Those competitors are nice, but I prefer SourceForge because its a little more straight forward. Those alternatives are just a little too complicated for me and they tend to have too many options, making it hard for me to decide which software is best. I also like that SourceForge has open-source options that the others do not, in case I need a free option.

Return on Investment

SourceForge

  • SourceForge has has a positive impact on our ROI by helping streamline several processes. We used to have to do multiple applications and contracts by hand, with SourceForge we were able to find the right software to maximize efficiency and and reduce overhead.
Jacob Grossman | TrustRadius Reviewer

Visual SourceSafe (Discontinued)

  • When we started using it, it allowed us to do source code versioning and store the code in a centralized location and not locally.
  • We are using it for very few projects with few developers that still maintain those applications and do not have time to merge the source code to Git.
