Sublime Text

Sublime Text is literally the perfect text editor for coding on a Mac. It's lightweight, intuitive, easy to use, and easy to customize. The free trial "period" is exceptionally generous, and surprisingly noninvasive. Options like seeing which files have changed, and which files have unsaved changes, have saved me countless hours of pulling my hair out over bugs. New versions also have some amazing git integrations and other features that I haven't used but I'm sure are very handy too!

The Welkin Suite

The Welkin Suite is a great IDE compared to the alternatives out there. If you need to code in Salesforce and you want a mostly seamless environment, then The Welkin Suite is the best option available, in my opinion. I have also been using it for Apex Tests and find that the tools are really good for measuring code coverage and highlighting those areas that are uncovered.

Pros

Sublime Text

  • Analyzing large amount of texts like logs is easy due to good searching capabilities
  • Updating big text files is quite easy due to very useful and flexible "find & replace" capabilities
  • The software is super lightweight and is not being "felt" at all in terms of performance

The Welkin Suite

  • Local History - Without having to setup GitHub this has been a time saver!
  • AutoComplete
  • Saves the entire project at once

Cons

Sublime Text

  • In a world of free and open text editors, Sublime Text does ask for donations. You can use the product freely with only a very infrequent popup asking for donations. You can use it however long you like without paying, but it is well worth it to donate to.
  • People not used to the functionality may need a bit of time to get up to speed using the documentation.
  • An integrated terminal would be nice, but that is just a quibble. It's hard to find many cons with Sublime Text.

The Welkin Suite

  • It would be nice if IDE feature releases were timed to coincide with Salesforce releases (i.e. make Lightning Web Components available on the day they become available in Salesforce instances).
  • The IDE can be a bit buggy especially when you have several windows of the IDE open to different Salesforce instances at the same time on one machine.
  • Sometimes, when you click to retrieve your data too soon, before the program has a chance to ask you to connect to the instance, it can cause the IDE to freeze.

I love this application. It has helped to improve my work. Also, I became so used to the shortcuts that It's hard for me to change to another editor.

This is a programmers tool. As such a lot of the features and benefits are lost on a non-technical user. To get the most out of the tool you need to have a basic crash course in how it works and what it can do. The documentation and community are good, but it takes a bit of time to get up to speed.

Never had to use their customer support before. There is ample documentation online so it's straightforward to find a solution to any problem you might encounter. For example, I needed to convert a string of HTML code to a properly formatted HTML file to "modify." Easy to do when there are so many users of the product who have needed to do that same thing before.

In general, when you need support there is someone there to give you an answer. I think there could be an improvement in this area, but it's hard to provide a substantial amount of support for a product that is charging roughly $15 a month. Do I feel I get more than $15 worth of support value when I need to request it? Yes.

Alternatives Considered

Sublime Text

Visual Studio Code was honestly a tough competitor to Sublime for multi-language projects, and ultimately edged it out for some of the teams I worked with. It's library functionality was far superior, it is 100% open source vs ads, and it has a similar speed. PyCharm and WebStorm were better as dedicated IDEs for python and javascript respectively, although Sublime worked better for multi-language projects.

Return on Investment

Sublime Text

  • Sublime Text has helped me to focus on specific tasks, cutting out the clutter that many other IDEs have. As such, it has helped me be a more productive employee because I don't get dazed by hundreds of buttons. I can focus on just the code.
  • Sublime Text is so affordable that it's a no-brainer to have an extra tool in your toolset.
  • The Search features of Sublime Text are so useful that it has saved me a great amount of time compared to using Find & Replace menus in Xcode, Android Studio, or Eclipse.
