Categories & Use Cases

Use GIMP for all your bitmap editing needs

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use GIMP the way anyone would use other image editing tools like Photoshop. In fact, I have exclusively used GIMP in my business for over 20 years to edit images. It is easy to use, available on a variety of platforms, and works quickly. Although I like the focus GIMP has on static bitmapped images, I could see the project forking for vector graphic editing, and video editing!

Pros

  • Bitmap photo editing
  • Working on multiple platforms including: GNU/Linux, macOS, Windows.
  • Bang for the buck, it's free!

Cons

  • Vector graphic editing would be great internally, instead of inkscape
  • Video editing would be great
  • Marketing! Not enough people know about GIMP.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

GIMP is a go-to application for me to perform all kinds of graphical creation and editing. I've used it to update company logos, to create and modify technical diagrams, to convert graphical formats, to upscale files, design client's digital greeting cards, and more.

Pros

  • photo editing
  • provide compatibility with numerous file formats
  • make it very simple to manipulate layers in a file
  • Plugins

Cons

  • GIMP should make the font tool more intuitive. Make it easier to change fonts during edit process without resetting the typeface selection.
  • Build in selection/move ability within tools like the typeface tool... I.e. don't require toggle between selection tool and typeface tool when wanting to move a line of type within a layer. Likewise with shapes, etc.

Return on Investment

  • There is no downside here. GIMP is freely available and is worth the downloading and installing.

Alternatives Considered

Inkscape

Other Software Used

Microsoft 365 Business Premium, N-able N-central, SpamHero, MiniTool Partition Wizard, Macrium Reflect, GoodSync

Usability

GIMP is My Go-To Photo Editing Choice

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I work with a ton of photos of adorable dogs and cats from our community. Some of these photos are good, some aren't. Some need lots of manipulation and some just need resizing. I don't need a complicated program, but GIMP has more advanced features if I need them. Basically I use it for photo editing purposes to create quality images we use in print and electronic form..

Pros

  • Photo editing
  • Photo retouching
  • Image resizing
  • Image opening and re-saving as other file type

Cons

  • It can stand to be a bit more user friendly. GIMP feels like a more advanced software.
  • Better online help documentation is needed.
  • The interface is pretty small, with tiny type. I'd love to see it bigger.

Return on Investment

  • I don't need to pay sky-high Photoshop subscription costs, it saves me a ton of money there.
  • I like the rapid photo editing features it allows.
  • GIMP is pretty easy to learn IF you already have a little knowledge of photo editing software

Everything you need. None of the fluff!

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I primarily use GIMP for editing staff identification photos. It makes the process super easy, the service is free and continues to stay current with the latest updates. I have found this program to be much easier to use than other platforms and appreciate its simplistic format.

Pros

  • Lasso tool is great for getting a nice clean cut around the edges
  • Easy removal of backgrounds
  • Layering - simplified.

Cons

  • If you have never used a photo editing software it can be a little overwhelming with so many buttons and not always clear on their function.

Return on Investment

  • Being able to utilize a free product that works as well as a paid subscription has definitely been a positive ROI. (Adobe PhotoShop Elements for instance is $30 per month)

Adobe PhotoShop, Adobe Acrobat

Powerful, free tool

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I used GIMP to edit images and create graphics for our organization's SharePoint Online environment. This usually involves adding transparency layers to photos and removing the background for assets in our fleet. I am not a skilled graphics designer, but GIMP makes it easy to accomplish the simple image editing tasks that I have from time to time.

Pros

  • Powerful
  • Robust
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Somewhat complex
  • Outdated UI
  • Overwhelming for new users

Return on Investment

  • Saved us money by providing a free tool to create simple assets with for internal use.
