For data and analytics. Alation is our data catalogue tool used primarily to collaborate and index data. Alation is being used by the team to share and transfer knowledge, search for and understand data, and overall to improve the analyst experience and way of work.
  • Increased data collaboration and knowledge transfer among data workers
  • Improved data access and data searching capabilities
  • Data mapping can be confusing
  • Support service needs improvement
Alation Data Catalog offers effective cataloguing and surfacing/availability of various datasets for easy, self-service access by Analysts and other key data & analytics roles across the organization

We use Alation for visibility into the tables, views, and dashboards across our data platforms, adding metadata to help users find the best data for their needs. We also use the Business Glossary capability to provide a centralized, searchable place that promotes a common business language. It includes definitions, business rules, some concept diagrams, and links to additional context. And we use articles to provide additional context, best practices, and links to training.
  • Ability to link objects using the @ symbol. It allows us to easily provide a way to get more information or context. So if the business concept is part of a hierarchy, we can link to the other terms in that hierarchy.
  • The customization is really helpful. Most object types have robust customization options. Others are less so, but it is improving. We've created multiple custom fields to support our data governance framework.
  • The search feature with filtering is helpful in narrowing down what you're looking for.
  • Term tables are not yet in the Alation Analytics area. This makes it difficult to manage the creation of terms in the various business glossaries.
  • We've had some issues with the connectors, but Alation has been helpful in trying to get them to work.
  • The BI area is not as robust as the rdbms area. Tableau dashboards are listed as folders which can be confusing for users.
Alation is pretty easy to implement. We were able to do it ourselves with Alation's help, no 3rd party needed. We are currently migrating to Snowflake, and it has been helpful with prioritizing what gets migrated. It's great for searching for tables and views. I even use it when I'm trying to find fields in a large table. If I'm not sure if the field is called first_name, firstname, or fname, I can use Alation's table page, filter for fields with "name", and easily find it.

Our Data Catalog team has used Alation Data Catalog to create technical and business metadata for Snowflake data. Essentially, we are creating a repository of data sets used in our organization. We have now completed the initial round of metadata curation, and it is time to roll out the data catalog to the entire Account Processing business unit. In addition to rolling out one business unit, there is a high chance that the use of Alations Data Catalog becomes multi-business functional with hopes of going enterprise wide in the near future.
  • The User Interface is very easy to navigate making it user-friendly for all users.
  • The built in connectors allows for easy connection to important data sources and other tools.
  • Customization tools are a plus when it comes to combining different business units.
  • They have a bunch of learning material and documentation, especially Alation Community where you can find solutions to problems you are facing.
  • Adding Connectors is a little bit difficult. If they were able to make it a little more user friendly, that would be helpful.
Our business units goal was to have a data catalog used as a repository for data and definitions that are widely used within our organization. Alation has been perfect for making this goal come to life.

Our leadership once said "Uncataloged data is useless to us." We use Alation to catalog our data, track lineage, and explain our business.
  • Entering and editing content. The UI is easy to use and understand.
  • Browsing and searching for content is intuitive and detailed.
  • Adding data sources is easy to do through the UI without having to fiddle with configuration files.
  • The lineage UI is not ready for primetime. I would not recommend this feature for my users at this time because it's too complex to understand and is visually difficult to track down specific paths.
  • The underlying infrastructure of the on-premise version of the software is fragile and unnecessarily complicated, using too many modules and technologies.
  • The license model of the on-premise version contains too many add-ons. I would like to pay one price and get all of the features.
Alation has a very intuitive UI that is great for content authors (i.e., Stewards) to write documentation for their data. It is easy to browse through and search for your data. It's easy to keep in sync with your data sources so you're always working on the latest version.

I would not recommend it for tracking lineage as that feature is immature and difficult to use.

We use Alation to house our business glossaries and as a map of our data sources on prem. The use of Alation is helping our different departments use terms and metrics in a consistent manner. Alation also in invaluable as a resource to our analysts on finding out the where and what of our data elements.
  • integrating with other programs (SQL Server, Tableau)
  • the ability to link terms to data elements and queries
  • searchability
  • the ability to enforce uniqueness of term names is missing
  • need more customization options on glossaries
  • better home page customization options (less scripting required)
A data catalog is a necessity for any business that has and uses data. Alation is a top competitor in the industry and has an consistently evolving roadmap. The only reason that I gave a 9 instead of a 10 is because I have not used any other catalog products to compare to Alation.

We use Alation to support our decentralised data architecture. It acts as our discovery layer for users to find the information and/or data source for their use case
  • Business Glossary
  • Search feature
  • Data source management
  • Lineage connections between different data sources
  • Glossary links (from one glossary to another)
Alation is perfect for managing data ownership and stewardship, acting as the 'front door' or 'window' to data, glossary terms, domain homepages. It is great for consumers to find out about the update schedule on their current data sources or ones they will potentially use in future.

I'm less inclined to use the 'direct connection' via Alation to data sources, mainly for decoupling dependencies for any production supporting applications with Alation (if Alation goes down, we don't want it to take the connection down). But it is a great tool for putting the producers and consumers in touch with each other to arrange the connection.

We're at the tail end of our right-start implementation. The objective is creating a single source of information for consumers of data as well as discovery and consolidation of assets that live in silos within the organisation. Our practice is at an early stage so will be related to a data maturity / governance programme that is about to start.
  • Right Start
  • University and supportive training materials
  • Intuitive interface
  • Support for Microsoft legacy products such as SSIS would be great
  • Physical presence in New Zealand would be great, virtual contact is okay but may add time to task completion / consolidation of learning
  • Simple statements on systems / environments / protocols supported by connectors would be great up-front to inform decision making.
At an early stage:
  • Discovery of data is great
  • Notations work well
  • Implementation support gives a lot of confidence to the user group
However, support for legacy environments where SRSS and SSIS are used (a lot of public sector in NZ) could be stronger.

Comparison of business problem to Alation value add:
* People say different words but mean the same thing > Centralized Business Glossary for reference translation
* I dont know what data exists > Automated metadata extraction provides real time look at what data assets are out there
* I dont know what the nuances/meaning of data is > Curation of Data dictionary allows data teams to add definitions, calculations and more
* I dont know who the owners of a report are to request a change or get more context > Alation allows you to document and assign ownership for data assets
* I dont know what Data Assets are classified as sensitive data or subject to applicable to legal regulations > Alation allows for cataloging of data assets using rule sets, for ease of classification

  • User friendly interface
  • Customer and Sales Support
  • API
  • Filtering in Search
  • Customization in Documentation Display
  • Per User / Connector Licensing
More appropriate:
  • Startup governance programs
  • Less technical user base
  • High focus on curation abilities
  • vetting/approval workflows in business signoff
  • Non microsoft stack
Less Appropriate:
  • Complex governance structure
  • Advanced user base
  • Heavy reliance on ACTION based workflows

We use it as a single source of truth for our organization to find and understand data. The core use case that the tool is solving for is that single source of truth, we don't currently have a central repository for all of our different server types. Our scope is Enterprise wide.
  • Organization
  • Customization
  • Ease of use
  • The PowerBI connector could be easier to use
  • Data Profiling
  • Data Quality
We are still in the set up phase but the sheer ease-of-use has led to a pretty smooth implementation so far. We are receiving outstanding customer service from the Alation team and feel confident we will have a working, customized, robust implementation for our data. We would have like to see some data quality present inside the tool, we have had to find different solutions to help our teams with those checks.

Documentation is often sparse for data in any organization. We use Alation as a central repository for metadata curation and documentation, and also as a central communication hub for our data.
  • Easy to navigate
  • Easy to curate metadata
  • Automates metadata ingestion
  • Excellent support from sales team after the sale
  • Reporting
  • Fine tuning exports for data curation
  • Ability to make mass edits within the interface without another add on product
If you want to get up and running for governance and cataloging with little learning curve for stewards and end users, Alation is a wonderful tool. People take to it like a duck to water because it is so intuitive.

If you want a full integrated, powerful lineage solution, Alation requires add on products and their partners are not the best choice for automated lineage without manual components for some highly used types of connections like SSIS.

Making metadata on the presentation layer datasets available to the business users, analysts and stakeholders.
  • upload of data dictionary
  • natural language search
  • easy to use UI
  • articles and tag facility
  • more formats to upload data dictionary like excel, csv(without having to enclose data in rich text or html)
  • email notification when someone assigns/asks questions to you using "conversation"
Great tool for data catalog maintenance. Compose, articles, tags are great features. Custom templates and flexibility around homepage customization. Lineages could have been improved for the datasets which are database views and Alation could read the view definition to form lineage out of it, instead of having to wait users to write queries and then have Alation learn connections through those queries.

Alation is a tool that allows you to very easily get familiar what data is available in your database through a machine learning-based catalogue and documentation. The ability to see easily click through different tables and columns is something I have not been able to do in any another database tools so far. Additionally, the query editor and ability to easily safe and share queries with your peers is a please to work with as well.
  • Browsing through database
  • Quick access to SQL editor
  • Sharing queries with other
  • Stability of the SQL editor
  • UI of the SQL editor
When you have a database and you don't have the ability to easily scan through what data you have available

1.Collects metadata and its description in one place. Keeping metadata up-to-date due to automatic regular metadata extraction.
2.Provides easy access to metadata within one tool with no necessity to request specific accesses to separate data sources.
It hepls analysts and other team members to find data which suits them best to solve their business cases (create/improve product, create reports etc).
3.Represents information about stewards, owners and other responsible people/teams around each data source.
4.Gives an oppurtunity to write articles/terms on different topics and link them with actual technical metadata.

  • Easy search between different objects with Advanced search.
  • AI generates titles. Majority of them are suitable.
  • Stewardship dashboard really helps stewards to work with sources they are responsible for.
  • There is a flexibility to add custom fields to objects` pages.
  • Users with no admin roles have no possibility to see the latest successfull metadata exrtaction. At out bank users are really interested in this informaton.
  • Viewers, not stewards, will be more motivated in contributing to Data catalog (especially describing metadata) if there is a some reward system. Yes, now we can see top contributors within Alation Analytics Dashboard, but for this purpose we need to go to this part of Data Catalog. What about some medals/bagdes, which will be shown near personal name?
  • There is no solution how to show data source as single source, when it has a microservice architecture and it consists of many databases? Now, for Alation DC, 1 database = 1 data source, so how should we connect, for example, 5 databases, which is known as one system?
Where Alation Data Catalog is well suited:
1.Collecting metadata in one place with easy access to its.2. Providing possibility to find metadata by techical names as well as business description. It`s possible to search among all objects being on Advanced search page or to search certain schema/table/column being on respective objects` pages.
Where it is less appropriate: 1.There is a lineage functionality, but it shows lineage mostly for views within one data source. It`s impossible to see the lineage for any table viewer is interested in and the one way to do this - create lineage manually, what can do only Admins.

I am using Alation to aid in our data governance efforts. It ties all the metadata together beautifully and helps give deeper insights into the data stories we are telling and how they are built. I have plans to use it for a best practices and policies repository as well where employees across the organization can write articles and how to manuals and make them available to everyone.
  • Data Governance
  • Lineage
  • Self help data research
  • Menu navigation can be complex
  • Price is steep
  • Alation Everywhere isn’t available on all license structures
It is a pricey investment but if you can find the budget for it I don’t feel like you will be disappointed. It is a great tool for data governance, meta data, lineage and overall collaboration with articles. Things just start to come together seamlessly and the connectivity is awesome.

Alation Data Catalog is used as a data analytics tool within the part of the organization that I reside in. It serves as a database for all of our data, including third party data, where we can run queries that are then used in Tableau dashboards, Microsoft Excel pulls and other data analytic tools. This data analyses is then used to build presentations for the VPs and above.
  • Data Analyses
  • Queries
  • Data export
  • SQL
  • additional help tools
  • guided building

Great as a data analytics and queries tool; pretty easy to use with a user-friendly interface. I would not recommend it for anyone with zero SQL or knowledge, or even without basic Microsoft Excel formula function knowledge. I would suggest taking some online SQL courses to build up your knowledge of data queries

We use Alation as a data discovery tool at our company. It's highly used as a query running tool as well. It's been used across EDW systems and helps in identifying the metadata about data. It is ensuring a single source of truth and you can find all the information in one place.
  • Query builder
  • Entity relationship
  • Metadata
  • Conversations
  • Data flow
  • Impact analysis

Alation is best suited for data analysts and data scientists to understand the business using the metadata that it curates. It provides a platform for users to be able to run queries and share them with other users, which creates a collaborative environment. It is a single source of truth to learn more about the data you work with daily.
