Overall Satisfaction with Alation Data Catalog

Alation is the principal data governance platform and serves as a technical enabler for our data risk management framework and compliance obligations. It is primarily used by data stewards and technical teams to document our critical data elements, which are then linked to physical data dictionaries, data lineage, and data quality & usage statistics.

Good experience overall - Alation played a key role in our organisation meeting its data governance obligations. Their customer support is highly responsive, their account management team is excellent, and we are actively engaged in the future feature roadmap. Having said that, we are keen to see more use of automation in the DG life cycle, particularly through the integration of agentic AI for documentation, and even better integration with 3rd party platforms.

Alation in our assessment delivered the most well-rounded feature set. While others performed stronger in specific areas (e.g. DQ monitoring) the overall conclusion was that Data Catalog had the best capabilities to deliver key data governance tasks such as discovering and administering critical data element documentation, data policies, and data risk controls.

Alation is one of the most mature data governance toolkits available in the market. It comes with robust data dictionary & lineage capabilities and is one of the few software vendors that delivers capabilities beyond that technical baseline. Where it shines is in its ability to automate high-effort work such as DQ monitoring and data lineage documentation.

As a platform it is well suited for organisations that need oversight over complex data ecosystems, or that need to meet stringent data risk control & compliance requirements (e.g. government, health and financial services).
