Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Altium Develop is a great choice for a small electronics team and provides almost all the features we used to enjoy from a full Altium subscription for under half the price. We use Altium Develop for schematic capture, PCB layout, review and thw cloud based releaser to provide up-to-date project files to external manufacturers.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are a small organization, without a staff assigned to BOM management. Altium helps me be a one man show without spending excessive time on BOM management and version control. Also, I am able to more easily control versioning, compared to previous KiCad workflows and trying to control through git and other methods.

More visibility into layer matching when importing from other EDA software.
Occasional disconnection from live licensing, with loss of some design work when unable to save.
Very slow loading, even on moderately powerful PC's

Overall, a powerful tool, and most if not all new development will be moving onto Altium. I did have an older design in Eagle that did not translate well into Altium due to unconventional board ald layer design (PCB was being used as a heater, with vias and tracks conducting heat from component side to blank side being used as a heat sealer. Ended up using KiCad for that, was easier to move to it from Eagle.

Not releasing features that have significant amount of bugs

We use Altium Designer for PCB design and PCBA design management. It allows us to develop circuit boards for our product needs. We use a combination of Altium for our engineering team and KiCad for simpler production/test boards. Altium is also used for PCB part management and design version control.

Pros

Schematic Design.
PCB Layout.
Release management.

Cons

Altium Develop License Management is absolutely terrible, and whoever released it should rethink their position.
Altium support is less than useful when it comes to license management issues and instead blames the customer's IT rather than admitting an issue with their software.
Constant changes to the program under the guise of 'new features' that break backward compatibility and previous workflows. General enshittification of their software.

Likelihood to Recommend

Altium is resting on its laurels from decades past. Since their purchase by Renesas, there has been a steady decline and a series of changes for changes' sake, rather than actual improvements or attempts to fix long-term bugs. For example, copying and pasting net wires and labels still causes the cursor to jump all over the place, but we've got useless new integrations and changes to how comments are displayed on parts that break previous functionality.

Altium Designer is a great ally for our company. The simple 365 interface allows our small team of engineers to oversee projects and assign tasks to various departments. We work in the automotive and battery management system sector, and it is important to be able to share opinions and ideas within our team.

Develop is easy to use in small companies where the design team is composed of a small group of engineers. For big companies, it is less appropriate; you need to switch to Altium Enterprise.

The company was on an Altium Professional license, and we changed to Altium Developer this year as most features in Professional were not being used or required. I am finding that the Altium Develop loading speed is faster than what Altium Professional used to be. Altium Develop is very easy to use, as all the features and commands are located in pretty much the same areas as in Altium Professional. The AD dashboard is very easy to use and intuitive. I like the fact that more seats can be added at any time if necessary. We use AD for Schematic and PCB design, creating documentation using Draftsman, Bill of Materials, and Gerber Files for PCB manufacturing. Having cloud services with version control makes project management much easier and provides the option to revert if needed. There are occasional updates offered for installation, which shows that the software is well maintained. Overall, very happy with Altium Develop.

Cons

Some plugins, like EMI checker, require a license, but that isn't obvious until you try to use them. It would make sense not to include it on the default ribbon unless the license exists.
Otherwise, all good, love the tool.

AD is perfectly suited for the company's needs. We design a few boards per year, and having one seat is enough for us. The software offers all the tools required to design, lay out, and send manufacturing files over to the PCB manufacturers. The version control feature is very useful for tracking changes, especially during the development and certification stages.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Help us manage our multiple PCB Designs, by keeping track of the different versions. It also helps us make sure the mechanical fit of multiple boards is as expected. Finally, collaborations is pretty much seamless where as long as you remember to commit you changes anyone else on the team can pick up where you left off.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are an electronics design and manufacturing firm, looking to improve our processes as we continue growing year over year. We previously have been using a low cost, simple EDA software for lean projects, however we need a more comprehensive solution for our larger projects. We also plan to use Altium to help with development testing in our CE/FCC lab.

Pros

Integration with solidworks and other commonly used design file formats.
Providing detailed DRC configurations
I really appreciate some of the output file generation configurations

Cons

There's way too many features locked in between different licenses, and it's not very clear on Altiums docs.
The lack of APIs nor documentation on scripting some of the outjobs
The lack of custom configuration on the repository system, library database options, and cloud settings.

Likelihood to Recommend

It's really great for large scale projects were collaboration between several teams is needed. For most simple projects its way overkill and the forcing of the cloud system is an unnecessary pain point.

I use Altium to create schematics and layout PCBAs for medical devices. I think for a mid-tier pricing the Altium Develop package gives you a lot of resources and abilities. The ability to create fabrication and assembly drawing that auto-pull the schematic and layout from the design files saves the possibilities of errors when exporting data to another CAD platform. I highly recommend Altium for any company looking to migrate layout software.

Importing symbols and footprints from online resources
The controlled impedance tool is easy to use

Cons

I would like to see a combined BOM and Assembly drawing like KiCAD
Easier automation of total design outputs with one button
stick with this current platform so quotes and POs can be done easily

Altium is my 4th PCBA layout tool used and was very easy to learn how to use and more powerful than the others (except for MentorGraphics Expedition). it is well suited for schematics and layouts for simple to complex boards handling multi-hundred element schematics and placements while easily keeping track of items.

Altium Develop has made it much easier to collaborate with colleagues on complex in-progress designs in real time. We no longer need to red-line in reviews, colleagues can leave comments and even draw modifications right into the schematic pages.
