we use it as our workflow management tool, time tracking tool, secure portal and CRM tool.
Pros
Canopy integrates well with Outlook to view client communications with anyone in the firm.
It has a strong workflow management modual
It provides an intuitive portal to share documents with, and receive documents from clients.
Cons
Canopy's time tracking feature is hard to get valuable data from without the pro version.
Canopy's dashboard for the workflow management could be better by providing a filter option of "Show me projects I'm assigned to and on which I am assigned to the current open workstep."
Canopy's training on the product could be better.
Likelihood to Recommend
Canopy can be a competitively priced product. When a client has a tax software that doesn't have other modules needed for the firm Canopy can be helpful. I would say for someone who wants all the tools available, CCH Axcess is still better.
Canopy is one of our accounting solutions that deal with taxation, cost analysis, billing, CRM, and others. Specifically, Canopy deals with investors where there is order and purchase management to get the right product with the best market value. Furthermore, Canopy fosters project accounting, which controls the efforts and the resources utilized. Canopy has the tax forms and supports the filing of the taxes online for companies.
Pros
Tracks the due dates of an operation or project.
Supports taxation, more so VAT and filing of returns.
The inventory control also supports companies.
Clients have individualized portals.
Cons
Canopy lacks scenario planning, which is essential.
No payroll management from Canopy.
Canopy fails to allow multi currency support.
Likelihood to Recommend
For accurate and remarkable accounting processes, Canopy is the program to embrace. One, it has the project accounting details where every resource has a detailed accounting feature. Again, matters on taxation and state compliance are professionally handled by Canopy. The tracking of the due dates for finishing a given operation is an incredible step.
Our entire staff utilizes Canopy on a daily basis. It's used to manage workflows, share documents within the company AND with clients, collect signatures and payments. We also use it as our virtual filing cabinet. It's great.
Pros
The top of this list is customer service without a doubt.
Innovating and updating the platform
Taking and implementing feedback from customers
Cons
Implement Organizers for business clients
Allow customization of Organizers
Continue focusing on a great CRM as opposed to tax prep software
Likelihood to Recommend
Canopy can handle supporting your tax firm from start to finish.
I had Canopy initially implement specifically in the tax department to manage my tax resolution clients but during the initial 12 month subscription, we determined it would be a useful customer relationship solution so it was rolled out to the accounting & bookkeeping area.
Canopy delivered a single source platform to manage the entire client relationship. We used it to collaborate amongst team members, store critical client documents and create IRS forms to submit. I also was impressed with the transcript delivery tool.
Pros
Interface is easy to use & understand
Single view of all things tax
Transcript delivery is great
Cons
They can add a few more columns to interface to include total tax liability amount
Reporting of data can be more inclusive
Likelihood to Recommend
Great interface Singular database for all tax data Transcript interface is great
Canopy is our one-stop for our entire company. We have one place to keep client files, communication streams, workflow and tasks along with billing and time tracking. We were working out of various spreadsheets and internal hard drive with client data. Now we have cloud access all to one place.
Pros
Customer service.
All in one database.
Cutting edge improvements with customer feedback.
Extremely adaptive settings.
Cons
Add texting into portal communication stream.

Really has features that are usable across many applications. Any form one benefit even if they used half of what is available. And if they don't have it just ask. They are open to development opportunities and are always working on updates and polling and testing as things roll out.
We are using Canopy to respond to IRS letters and to obtain transcripts from the IRS.
Pros
Good research on what info needs to be included in IRS response letters.
Cons
Obtainment of transcripts actually does not save time. Quicker to get transcripts directly from IRS than to use the Canopy feature. Oftentimes the obtainment of transcripts feature was not working.
IRS penalty abatement letters section was not user-friendly. Our staff often ended up just doing the letters to IRS manually.
Very poor customer service.
Likelihood to Recommend
Canopy is good for expediting IRS responses. It is not helpful for getting transcripts or power of attorney forms.
We use Canopy as a client database to keep virtual files. This enables us to work remotely. Over time we have expanded our use to include resolution, transcripts, notices. Virtually everything except practice management.
Pros
Good file management
The portal system works well, even for tech challenged clients
The client survey is a fast, painless way to prepare financial statements.
Cons
The transcript system is down more than it's up
The portal can be daunting for some users
It is difficult to interface with joint returns
Likelihood to Recommend
It is well suited for the small office that needs remote access.
It wouldn't work well for a solo practitioner.
Over time it's performance has degraded to the point where we are actively seeking alternatives to some of the modules.
It is being used across our finance and tax departments to make sure we are in compliance with state and federal laws. It also allows a streamlined and organized approach to our business and provides some checks that make our process much more efficient from a reporting and consolidation perspective.
Pros
Very good at process control. It's very clear how the data flows from within the software to out of it.
Very streamlined as we have a large team that is able to pick up processes where others have left off.
Really enjoy the reporting aspects. It's crisp, clean, and informative.
Cons
Transitions from one screen to the next.
Documentation just takes a little time to get up to speed.
Visual appearance could always be improved.
Likelihood to Recommend
Great for end-to end-reporting across tax compliance groups. Doesn't really handle large groups very well.
Could really use a more simplified approach for C-suite presentations.
It's really great at transitioning jobs from one user to the next. Although a simple email to let the user know could be very useful.
The entire organization uses Canopy for CRM, email tracking, task management, and document exchange. It is also crucial to our remote office team to view documents stored securely in the cloud for our clients. Tax preparers use it specifically to request additional documentation needed for preparation and to track progress in an engagement. Our Enrolled Agent uses it for tax resolution information gathering and form completion, and for transcript requests.
Pros
The ability to tag clients in the CRM helps create robust mailing campaigns.
The new dashboard feature lets senior management evaluate progress in tasks across the organization.
Secure document sharing is invaluable.
Cons
Connectivity with Outlook for email tracking - the connection is sometimes lost and there is no notification. You just look for your email trail and there is nothing.
Electronic signatures for multiple contacts on one document with some fields being optional would be a great help.
Being able to see contact transcripts in the client record view versus just the transcript screen would be more efficient.
Likelihood to Recommend
Canopy is well suited for an office that has multiple people working on single projects. It is expensive, and offices without strong procedures will not benefit; rather it may seem like Canopy creates work.
I have a very small business, just myself and one other employee. We use Canopy for all tax compliance cases, even as minor as just responding to notices. It helps us streamline the process of tax compliance cases, from getting clients to sign the engagement, all the way to the completion and payment. It helps with communicating with clients, requesting information and storing documents securely for both our team and clients to see.
Pros
Client portal
File storage
Task management
Client communication
Cons
Document Signing
Pricing
Ability to save and/or email transcripts within the software
Syncing with Tax Preparation Software (i.e. Drake, ProConnect)
Likelihood to Recommend
Well suited for anyone working on any type of tax compliance issues for clients regularly. Due to it's cost, I'd say it's less appropriate if you are only helping clients with tax notices every now and then and possibly doing Payment Agreements every once in a while.
