Cisco Aironet 1560 Series Access Points review

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I installed the external series of the Cisco Aironet 1560 in a factory, as they needed wifi coverage to be able to use the barcode readers through the wifi network for the management of stock control of the merchandise. I was very surprised by the quality of the outdoor box, they are still working without any problems today after a year.

Pros

A large amount of product documentation for installation and even administration is a big plus
The coverage radius is very good
The power consumption is very low with full power and the external AP is only 25 watts.

At the beginning of the implementation, we had a lot of problems with the barcode readers because of the change of AP coverage areas. Thanks to the software that has the controllers and cleanaire features and the power management and channel change, we were able to control and improve the problem we had when the operations moved and changed coverage zones.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Cisco Access Points provide connectivity in areas previously unreachable for network connectivity within our plants. Business efficiencies abound due to manual processes being replaced by wireless access to applications to gather production data in mechanical areas.

Pros

Outdoor mesh bridging of access points brings significant cost savings to many of our production facilities. Deploying mesh APs is a significant cost reduction over trenching conduit to connect remote areas via fiber.
Cisco APs are extremely resilient, with a failure rate of below 5% in some of our harshest environments.
Cisco APs have the intelligence to identify wireless interference sources with Clean Air technology

Cons

Powering options have been problematic in a few deployment scenarios. Newer APs have very robust power needs that are difficult to provide.
Cisco 3800 series APs have failed more frequently than previous models.

Likelihood to Recommend

Cisco Aironet and Catalyst Access Pointss are excellent choices for both our enterprise offices and remote production sites due to Cisco’s depth of wireless product options. I have not encountered any scenario where I could not use Cisco APs.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

At the time when we used the Cisco Aironet, it was exclusively for office use. We used an average of 3 AcessPoint for a floor of 300 square meters and perfectly met our needs. On the floor, we had an average of 120 customers using the wireless network exclusively. With calls and videoconferences without any impact on the client's experience.

Pros

Wide signal coverage.
Antenna movement: Client moving on the floor and migrating from access points.
Speed delivered to the end customer and robust volume of customers connected in a single access point.

Cons

In the facilities where we operate, we had to put a reinforcement on the ceiling to avoid problems due to the weight of the access point.
On the appearance, it could be smaller and lighter.
As for the hardware, I think it's incredible, I don't see any points to improve.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

These access points are really amazing. They are used by all departments of the organization and also for guests who access from a login portal. The company has several houses spread over a large lot and we have several 1552 access points installed on poles to provide wireless internet in all areas of the company's coverage. All internal and external areas have access to wireless internet with the help of this equipment. This is important due to the collection of bar codes with RFID.

Pros

Access points protected against lightning, rain, and fog.
Controlled and managed by central WLAN controller.
Elegant and beautiful design.
Cisco support and warranty very effectively.

Cons

It does not work on the 802.11ac protocol.
I no longer see any technical defects or negative points.

Likelihood to Recommend

Cisco 1550 APs are installed outdoors, in the company's courtyard. They are connected to posts and some connected to a mesh network. APs are external models and have protection against rain, snow, fog, winds. So far, we have had no technical problems with these models. I recommend it because they are very efficient, with great performance and excellent warranty and technical support.

The Cisco Aironet 1550 Series Access Point is a great choice for small companies to provide internet access in their headquarters or secure locations/hazardous locations. Currently, we are using it in our secure server room where only a few limited people have access to and our outdoor lounge which is prone to weather wear/tear and also wildlife. This is a very useful and heavy-duty router in hazardous/outdoor locations in corporate locations. A business problem that it addresses is the weight and the price.

Cons

Very heavy
Price is a bit too high for its value
Configuration is harder than expected

Cisco Aironet 1550 Series Access Points is very useful for outdoor locations that are more exposed to the wilderness or the weather, which provides uninterrupted wifi access during high winds and bad weather. It also is useful for hazardous locations that are prone to danger or wildlife. Unfortunately, it would not be appropriate to get a Cisco Aironet 1550 Series Access Point if it is only needed for basic wifi use, or indoor use, as the extra features and price would not be necessary.

Our Cisco [Aironet 1560 Series] Access Points are being used across the whole organization to increase the range of our wifi system. It allows us to provide coverage to the entire building as well as outside. The outer shell makes it more resistant to the elements, and the internal antenna makes it discreet and unobtrusive.

[Cisco Aironet 1560 Series Access Points are] not great for inside the office, it makes the office look ugly. It's antennas are large an annoying to look at, and the color of the shell doesn't make it any better. Its great outside as the housing is very solid and provides good coverage. With an internal antenna, it is somewhat manageable in an office, but it is best suited for outdoor use.

The 1570 are used mainly to provide outdoor coverage around the campus area where people usually walk or sit. They cover almost 90% of the research building outdoor areas and some of the facilities (restaurants, gyms, recreational clubs).

Cons

Internal Antenna.

Due to its software, it can fit in any outdoor deployment or requirement. It has POE Out port, Various Antenna selection, various powering option, GPS, Industrial rigid design (coming from a very hot and humid area), SFP compatible.

You can deploy this AP nearly on any use case you face, I have a successful deployment of 400m distance between two of them as a MESH and it has been running fine for the past 2 years on the beach, it's also providing wired connection to clients on the MESH side.

Some other use case is a WGB connected to a AirQuality sensor that has been up since day 1, with no problems whatsoever.

We use Cisco Aironet and Access Points (AP) across all the organization, within the main campus and remote branch offices. All are managed by a Cisco WLC, serving about 25 VLANs. It provides secure connectivity to mobile devices for rating customer attention, BYOD, guest users and wireless IP phones.

Wireless network stability
Great coverage
Easy configuration
Support for several VLANs
Secure communications

Cons

Better form factor (smaller size)
Support for more clients per access point when using media traffic.
Better application visibility and control for lightweight and autonomous access points.

Likelihood to Recommend

Cisco Aironet has a wide product portfolio for all scenarios, both indoor and outdoor. I've worked as a field engineer installing Cisco wireless solutions and now as a customer using and managing them. Across the many uses, I must mention: warehousing, enterprise office, outdoor wireless bridge, and high density wireless access. Of course, the success of any implementation will depend on a well conducted site survey.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

At one of our locations, we are using the Aironet Access Points throughout the buildings. We are situated in multiple old building in the same street but we managed to create a wireless network so roaming all the buildings is possible. This makes working on the wireless network a snap.

Pros

Good coverage after detailed preparation.
speed is good.

Cons

At one point we did have stability issues on some devices but that was solved by rebooting. Strangely most devices than work for months.
Price is a bit high.

Likelihood to Recommend

If you want an enterprise wireless network Cisco might not be the de-facto standard (as they are in wired networking equipment) but they are a strong contender. If you are a small company Cisco might not be the first to go to, but definitely give it a good look. Prepare by doing some measurements in your building.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are using the Cisco Aironet access points across the whole organization. The access point and wireless network address all of our wireless needs across the organization, including medical equipment, telephony, as well as other applications. We also service a few branch offices with these access points from both a data and telephone perspective.

Pros

Deployment is easy from the Cisco Wireless LAN Controller. Also, if setting up autonomous mode, is pretty easy as well.
Easy to deploy and inventory.
Administration is complex but easily learned.

Cons

Roaming seems to be an issue with newer devices on the older 1600 access points.
The coverage provided by different power levels doesn't seem accurate at times.
Susceptible to common interference issues in healthcare.

Likelihood to Recommend

Definitely not underneath mechanical penthouses, but I suppose that holds true with any wireless access points.
