Harsh Conditions No Problem

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have used the Cisco Catalyst IE3200 Rugged Series Switches for deployments at various city agencies. They replaced another vendor that had failing equipment (supposed to be rugged) and the Cisco's did a GREAT job at keeping the network stable. Prior to the replacement, the network had issues with stability and flapping ports which caused re-convergence issues across the traffic network.

Pros

  • Stability in harsh weather conditions
  • Easy to configure with a GUI that non network professionals could use
  • Customization with the ability to have the most common amount of SFP ports needed

Cons

  • Firmware update notifications could be better
  • Security bug notifications
  • Option for integrated power supplies

Likelihood to Recommend

The Cisco Catalyst IE3200 Rugged Series Switches were very well suited for hard conditions and in small to mid-size traffic networks. The ability to have detailed logs to help troubleshoot networking issues is definitely a strong point for Cisco. The GUI is also very intuitive for non technical folks. Cisco TAC is amazing too, for any support needed, so we highly recommend getting support.

Built to Endure - Cisco Catalyst IE3200 Rugged Switch

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

In our industry, production areas can be very demanding for electronics, with lots of dust, high humidity, and relatively high temperatures. Although traditional switches sometimes manage in such environments, wherever possible, we use rugged switches from the Cisco Catalyst IE3200 Rugged Series Switches. They fit well in tight industrial cabinets on DIN rails. We wanted greater resilience, and we were not disappointed. Additional features such as various power options and SwapDrive make it a truly excellent solution.

Pros

  • Robust Construction
  • Redundant Power Options
  • SwapDrive Technology

Cons

  • more Layer 3 features
  • enhanced management and configuration options
  • more industrial protocols and connectivity options

Likelihood to Recommend

Cisco Catalyst IE3200 Rugged Series Switches excel in manufacturing environments, offering reliable networking connectivity amidst dust, moisture, and temperature variations. Also, for transportation, logistics, and outdoor deployments, providing uninterrupted network connectivity for critical applications. However, in every place where standard rack switches can be used, they are better options than 3200. So office environments, and data centers, where conditions are controlled, other models may be more suitable.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

So this product is used for IOT. It's used to connect sensors outdoors. It's also used to power outdoor wifi in parks. It's used for a lot of different things. We build boxes, put it up on light poles, parrot, and they just run. I think I would say we own about 30 of them and we've never had one fail. I've just jinx myself. But what can you do?

Pros

  • So the reason we purchase these products is the POE and we connect cameras, we connect wifi, we connect IOT devices, we connect edge servers all through this device.
  • It survives the hot Alabama summers and the cold Alabama winter nights. It's got the right temperature range, the right performance characteristics, does everything we need at the right, at a good price point.

Cons

  • It would be nice to have a better management interface on the device. We don't use DNA center for it.

Likelihood to Recommend

I've already said that it's well-suited. We use it in outdoor applications for downtown and park, wifi camera systems, outdoor camera systems, outdoor security camera systems. It's rugged. We can connect it to a DIN rail, hang it up on a light pole, set it, and forget it.

Cisco Catalyst IE3200 Rugged Series Switches Review

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

This product enabled us to deploy gigabit switching in our production holding freezers where we keep our food products. With our regular fleet of switches, we were unable to do so because of the harsh cold temperatures in the freezers. The PoE capability on the switches also enabled us to power freezer temperature sensors over ethernet. Also the generally small form factor fits perfectly in the space.

Pros

  • Ease of management
  • Operating temperature range
  • PoE Capability

Cons

  • Did not use the Alarm I/O which could have reduced the overall size of the device
  • USB-C Console would be nice
  • Above were my only 2 complaints

Likelihood to Recommend

In areas with harsh temperatures like freezers they are an awesome fit, as I mentioned in the first part of this review. I would not recommend this switch in an area where it may be exposed to other elements like water. For example, in a washdown area like in our food production plants, we are constantly hosing down / steaming the area to sanitize. The only way I would recommend it in an area like that is if it is physically located inside of some sort of enclosure, but in that case you might as well purchase a less expensive non-ruggedized switch and do the same.

Rugged switch for harsh environment

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Cisco Catalyst IE3200 rugged switches in areas with harsh working environment (dust, moisture, power issues). Typically, these are mechanical rooms or garages where network connectivity is a key factor for maintenance staff. Ability to provide power to wireless access points and IP cameras allow us to power up the devices directly not using power injectors. In addition, these switches can be easily integrated to DNA Center software which provides remote monitoring and management, and we are able to easily integrate it with other access switches in the company.

Pros

  • Industrial design
  • PoE+ support
  • DNA Center management
  • SFP fiber ports

Cons

  • Price
  • mGig ports

Likelihood to Recommend

Cisco Catalyst IE3200 Rugged Series Switches are perfect fit for branch offices or industrial areas with difficult access for maintenance. They are also a great fit for companies that use network automation such as Ansible or DNA Center. These switches would probably not be very effective as an access switches because of less port capacity and performance. Also, they would not be feasible for organizations that use WiFi 6 access points with mGig ports.

Great performance for audio and video with safe connection.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We used it for enterprise network superior quality in enterprise networks We managed to extend video and voice services to industrial applications. Based on our requirement, we opted for Cisco Catalyst in order to make sure the network us safe and fast enough during the most challenging endurances and quality tests.

Pros

  • Superior security.
  • Extended switches.
  • Extended voice services.

Cons

  • A bit of speed improvement could help.
  • The technology is quite new and more docs would help.
  • Only 3 internet protocols are supported.

Likelihood to Recommend

Very well suited for video The integrated power supply is an outstanding Swappable SD flashcard with up to 24 fixed ports to take maximum advantage of this device It has a DIN rail mountable version and IP67 compliant Two switches version that we can select depending on the location as well and on the industrial application.
