Cisco Duo MFA Product Review
Use Cases and Deployment Scope
Cisco Duo is used when our users log into their Desktops, it prompts them for a Cisco Duo key, which in our case is sent via their cell phones. Also, we use Cisco Duo to secure our Student Management system and our Staff / HR systems. We are planning to roll out application control requiring Cisco Duo as well. It is a very powerful tool, which we have had to carefully deploy so we do not block out entire groups, or make it very tedious logging into applications.
Pros
- It works very well with workstation authentication.
- It works very well with VPN client authentication.
- It is very stable for applications, such as HR department access
- It is a very stable tool for wireless network access.
Cons
- Our biggest issue is if someone forgets their cell phone, they need to either contact us to be put in bypass (which allows them access for a short time) or they can generate keys to be used if they lose their phone or have no wifi.
- If a client is in an area where their is no access to Wi-Fi, often they need to go to a location to get Wi-Fi to complete the login procedure.
Likelihood to Recommend
It is a very compete and solid solution Once it is in place, and you have configured the different settings and policies it is consistent and works well. It does take some time to work the kinks out. We had a Cisco support provider assist us while we stepped through the process of getting it set up.
How Cisco Duo can help secure your end user access
Use Cases and Deployment Scope
A few years ago our cyber insurance company started requiring us to use two factor authentication. We needed something we could roll out quickly, but also had a wide range of capabilities. We looked at different vendors and decided on Cisco Duo. It satisfied our need for interoperability with custom applications, additional support for servers and easy to use app for end users.
Pros
- Easy end user setup
- Well laid out administration console
- Support documentation
- Single Sign-on integration
Cons
- I'd like to see better integration for Apache Tomcat. We have a case management system that runs on Apache Tomcat, but are not able to integrate it with Cisco Duo for 2FA.
- It would be nice to have an auto delete feature after a user's account has been disabled.
- We are a non-profit so lower pricing would help us a lot.
Likelihood to Recommend
I would say if your company has diverse needs like custom apps integration or you require single sign-on then Cisco Duo is a good fit. Also, if you need to roll out 2FA quickly then Cisco Duo is a good solution. If on the other hand you have a tight budget and do not need the added features then Cisco Duo might be overkill.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope
We use Duo as MFA for domain login and for VPN login.
Pros
- It can be easily configured for application usage.
- Up time is very good.
- Easy to use for users.
Cons

- If someone is on wifi with a low signal and connected to a VPN, it will keep sending a Duo push at every reconnect. Not Duo's fault, though.
Likelihood to Recommend
We have been able to customize the Duo application, whether it is installed on a server or a workstation, and have the UI tailored to the environment.

Simple Secure and Reliable 2FA service
Use Cases and Deployment Scope
We use Cisco Duo as a 2nd factor authentication software to allow secure authentications for users accessing remote applications. In order to provide remote access, we required a secure method of allowing users to authenticate with a 2nd factor, Cisco Duo integrates seamlessly and security with Active Directory to allow directory sync into Cisco Duo.
Pros
- Ease of User administration
- Great documentation that is easy to read
- Readily accessible support
- Secure integration with Active Directory
- Polished User and Admin Interface
Cons
- this solution works great for our needs, very minor adjustments needed
- Add a column for user created date. Often times we need to purge users who have never authenticated, currently we need to open each DUO user to determine date created, it would be nice to have that column listed when view all accounts. IE user that was just created would not need to be purged vs user that is 6 months old and has never logged on
- provide clear instructions on how to backup and migrate tokens from one iOS device to another
