Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our business involves the setup of temporary construction offices during projects with our customers. We needed a way to easily connect a small office of about 3 to 5 people with our main headquarters. It needed to be resilient but also cost effective. In addition to these infrastructure requirements, it needed to be able to handle large amounts of data. Most importantly.. THEY needed to be able to set it up.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

So we use Cisco Meraki SD-WAN, different sets of Meraki products. Starting with Cisco Meraki firewalls as a gateway for our offices. We use Cisco switches also, we use Cisco Meraki access points for our wireless network, and for our security—the physical security—we use Cisco Meraki cameras as well.

Pros

  • I really like the firewalls and the access points, like the wireless ones. From a wireless access point perspective, we recently moved to the new MR57s, multi-gig bandwidth as well as Wi-Fi 6, which helps users connect wirelessly regardless of where they sit in the office. The experience they get doesn’t matter wherever they move—it’s fantastic. So we’ve moved from the previous iteration of Meraki Access Points to the new iteration, like two weeks ago, and we’ve seen a major shift in the user experience.

Cons

  • I think for me, the products are doing great. I would definitely suggest improvement in the support process. Getting support is great, but when I spoke with a support engineer a couple of weeks ago, they were basically going through the support documents that are available online, which I could have gone through as well. So it would’ve been great if support were more human-centric rather than just going through documents that are publicly available.

  • The product, as I said, the hardware, Cisco Meraki SD-WAN hardware has always been great. And the same thing with the Meraki line of hardware products as well. The wireless access points are great. They’re very stable, they can support any number of users depending on how we’ve selected the hardware. Firewalls are very scalable. They are super secure and have helped us configure office security or firewall security remotely from anywhere in the world. So it has definitely helped us manage the product remotely. At the same time, we’ve been able to support small or large branch offices regardless, using the Meraki product.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I’m a system admin, but don’t have any networking experience. I’m not a networking guy, and Cisco Meraki SD-WAN is easy enough for me to use, so it makes it very easy to use without any of that previous experience, so it’s good.

Pros

  • Very—it has a very intuitive interface, so even if you’ve never used it before, you should be able to find what you need pretty quickly.

Cons

  • There are a lot of menus within menus in the portal I use, so it’d be nice to maybe simplify that a little bit.

Return on Investment

  • It wasn’t my money to spend, but I think it’s been good—no regrets from my end anyway.
