Who Buys & Uses Epicor Propello

Pros

  • User-friendly interface for both back-end and front-end operations.
  • Effective inventory tracking and control capabilities.
  • Efficient item scanning and customer account handling at POS.

Cons

  • Limitations and complexity in reporting and data access.
  • Time-consuming data entry and challenging navigation for product management.
  • Integration and compatibility issues with other systems.

Propello is not ready for use.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are a hardware and lumber store. We also do rentals. We use Propello for all of our POS transactions and try to use it for orders and special orders.

Pros

  • The POS for scanning items, using the quick grid to select items, and finding the customer account all work well.
  • Doing inventory via the handhelds works decently for the staff.
  • Having access to multiple handheld devices has made a big difference for our staff out in the yard.

Cons

  • Orders, special orders, and sales that involve loading items from our yard are cumbersome, and many features just aren't possible. You have no control over pick tickets, and you can't print them on demand. There's no quick way to see what's coming in for special orders. For customers with several outstanding special orders, you don't know which order contains the items they are picking up. The entire process is cumbersome and difficult for staff to navigate, so I am looking to implement something outside of Propello to make things easier for staff and customers.
  • Purchase orders are also cumbersome. There's no quick way to add an item to a purchase order outside of the purchase order. The history it provides on the items within the PO screen isn't adequate for many of my items when making purchasing decisions. There is no reversal when costs or quantities are applied incorrectly. I wish I could think of everything, but this is another area that needs a lot of work.
  • Integration with DIB is not great. As the preferred vendor, I expected this to be much more seamless. UOMs and order multiples are frequently incorrect. My sales history isn't flowing over correctly, making it difficult to make buying decisions for the market without a lot of manual research. The Best Rewards national database does not let you pull the customer into the system. Auxiliary pricing items do not show correctly on e-commerce or on the member page for Do It Best. Again, there are several more areas where the integration is NOT there.
  • Reporting. The reporting is very much lacking. I know they have an add-on to get additional information from the system, but that's another expense for a system that isn't working well. There is no way to get a complete information set up on a product. There is no report for customers' past purchases. You have to go to a grid, enter filters, and download to Excel, and then you can do your own reports, but nothing I can run and give to the customer. Again, I have many more examples, but I don't have time to list them all.

Return on Investment

  • This system has added time to my day. We have a lot of extra work to gather the information needed to make purchasing decisions. It has been more confusing for our customers regarding special orders. We have had more mistakes in the yard because we don't have the information we need to load customers, prepare deliveries, etc. I hoped this would save me time, but 1 year later, I am working an extra 10-12 hours per week to do the same things I did before implementation, and the system costs more than my previous one. I had really hoped the extra investment would streamline things more and start to save me time.

Epicor Propello review

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use it for a POS. We use it for a register. We use it for creating POs, receiving POs, price updates, basically everything that has to do with hardware retail.

Pros

  • They create a structure. I would say the workflows that we have at our organizations, it's easy to either train other people or basically track certain things, like certain key performance indicators or keeping track of inventory. It's really helped us in that manner.

Cons

  • It's so tough because it's a dual edge sword. I know for Epicor Propello, because it could be used for all different types of hardware stores, depending on how they run their business, it makes it hard to standardize everything because everybody likes to do it in a different way. So sometimes it's hard to navigate which path makes sense for your organization to take.

Return on Investment

  • I would say all of the above. Specifically, the one that comes to mind because I have a background in retail is the pricing updates. That's helped immensely because usually I'm a second-generation operator, not in hardware, but in retail. I remember the old days where you had to go by invoice and almost do it by memory. It's like, oh, there's a price increase on this? We have to adjust accordingly. With Epicor Propello, it streamlines everything so it's updated on a weekly basis, where we can automatically review it, or I can assign that task to somebody else who does price management, and it makes it a lot easier. All the information you need is on one page. That's helped immensely. And there's tons of other examples like that.

Epicor Propello has potential but cant stand alone without better setup

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Epicor Propello for our POS system to do transactions, maintain inventory, order, etc. It has databases for our customers, products, vendors, transaction history, etc. It allows us to log transactions, order product, identify customers. We have the ability to know what we sell, how much we buy it for, how much we sell it for, who we buy it from, how often we sell it, etc. Ideally the software would allow us to efficiently transact, order, and maintain all of our inventory.

Pros

  • allows inventory to be available online for ecommerce
  • viewers that allow broad filtering to create lists
  • exporting data to excel

Cons

  • initial software setup so it's turn key
  • min/max and order point setup
  • open ticket/special orders and ordering at POS
  • price label designer and printer compatability
  • unit order multiples
  • security permissions
  • statements and A/R

Return on Investment

  • time to order is more efficient
  • frequent problems or bugs drains time and energy
  • strong securities can create bottle necks for returns or discounts
  • sloppy setup creates long-term problems and confusions
  • some global change abilities save time
  • label design and price change settings reduce margins
  • intuitive searches can save time
  • data conversion constrains create slop and dead weight

Epicor Propello

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use it to track our inventory coming in, our POS system, track the inventory itself, and then just our check-in process.

Pros

  • POS system's good

Cons

  • They could get the catalog synced up to do it better and make sure that they're communicating the way they should be. The check-in process needs to be explained a little better. The training, when you buy Epicor Propello, you do an online or phone training. I did not find that very useful. I think that could be better. More hands-on learning with it, where maybe they gave you an example, as you work through the example instead of just somebody telling you in three seconds what you need to do and then moving on to the next thing. That's my complaint about it. And the cost, of course, but what doesn't cost money now. So that's it.

Return on Investment

  • I thought it would be able to basically eliminate an employee, in a sense, to be able to do the ordering and the check-in process. We were old school, putting stickers on everything. I thought it would speed that up. It has sped up the check-in process now that we've got it figured out, but it only took us about a year to figure out how to actually do it. It hasn't made ordering really easy yet, but I'm hoping that after talking to the reps today, we get something figured out.

Usability

Satisfactory Uses of Propello

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Epicor Propello as a point of sale for our hardware store. This handles sales, customer rewards, invoices for companies, etc. I'd say the current problems we face would be with the booking and inventory side of Epicor Propello. Sometimes we have a hard time rolling out product from Do It Best when it comes out, other times we have issues with handling our books under Propello.

Pros

  • Their easy to learn and use interface is very nice. Its a clear cut design that not only makes it easy to learn, but easy to teach to others as well.
  • I really like the Quick Product tab for our POS. For things we carry outside, or out of reach, its a very helpful tool to just have those SKUs right there and available to me.
  • The ability to save and come back to active transactions has been something I've utilized a lot since getting Epicor Propello. It helps in various situations, but helps mostly when people remember last second that they need something.

Cons

  • I think the whole product management tab as a whole is a little bit confusing. There's a lot of small, out of sight tabs that offer a lot of different options, but you have to go really digging to find them.

Return on Investment

  • It has definitely saved time overall with the basic point of sale aspect. I don't have to go running around the store looking for an item that doesn't scan. I can just look it up right there in the system.
  • Setting up customers has become a lot easier, now that there's a whole section dedicated to setting them up with rewards.
