What is Grafana OnCall?

Grafana OnCall is an open source on-call management system featuring simpler workflows and interfaces tailored for developers.

Grafana OnCall (formerly known as Amixr) was started in 2018 at Amixr Inc., which Grafana Labs acquired in 2021. Launched on Grafana Cloud in late 2021 and open sourced in 2022 for users needing self-managed and on-premises deployments, Grafana OnCall provides an on-call management solution that allows engineers to know that only the relevant notifications will reach them. Grafana Labs uses Grafana OnCall to run its own cloud services.

Grafana Labs leads the development of the Grafana OnCall project, building first-class support for Grafana OnCall into Grafana, and ensuring Grafana Labs customers receive the Grafana OnCall support and features they need.

Grafana OnCall features:
  • Ability to create and manage on-call schedules via a calendar
  • Slack, Telegram, voice, and SMS alerting
  • A centralized view of alerts right within the Grafana UI
  • Automatic escalation chains with flexible routing to ensure the right person is reached during an outage
  • Automatic grouping of alerts to avoid alert storms and to reduce the noise during an incident
  • Support for a broad set of open source monitoring systems, including Grafana, Grafana Mimir, Prometheus, Alertmanager, Zabbix, and others
  • Detection - Monitoring systems detect an unexpected value for a certain metric, then trigger alerts and send them to Grafana OnCall.
  • Alert grouping and routing - Grafana OnCall receives the alerts, groups the alerts, and routes them according to configurable alert grouping and escalation steps.
  • Notification and collaboration - Teams and users are notified of alerts based on configured escalation steps, on-call rotations, and user notification settings.
  • Remediation - On-call team members are able to take action to quickly diagnose and resolve the problem.

Grafana OnCall is available free and open source as a self-managed solution. Via Grafana Cloud, it is offered as a fully managed service built on top of the Grafana stack. Or with Grafana Cloud Pro, it is available at a cost as a fully managed service.

Grafana OnCall organically fit into our IT infrastructure (as it supports Prometheus and Zabbix we already had in production use), performing the role of Incident Response & Management for developers and engineers. We found this tool is really useful to collaborate different departments (in our company we are using Teams), escalate issues and provide fast and informational alerting.
  • Interface and information visualization
  • Escalations process with useful IF, ELSE alerting logic
  • Simple integration with wide list of data sources and using of webhooks for non-supported sources.
  • Incident Response & Management for Developers Team (as well as tracking of an issue resolution process)
  • Users alerting of issues with production systems
One of the greatest drawback in any big companies is that different teams within an IT departments do not know what the others do. The worst case scenario is than Service Desk doesn't know where the issue resolution is and can not provide business with estimation recovery time as well as any update about the root cause of an issue. Grafana OnCall is the best tool that solved this misscolaboration in our company.
  • Wide list of alerting options.
  • IF, ELSE IF, and ELSE alerting logic.
  • Simplicity of management (custom escalation chains, on-call scheduling).
  • Automation.
  • Reducing services downtime.
  • Better users loyalty as a result of improving of intra-departments collaboration.
  • Reducing the load of Service Desk.
Unlike Grafana OnCall tool Splunk On-Call solution looks more complicated and noticeably inferior in the visualization of the information presented (UI is not user friendly). Alerts re-route process looks totally illogical and you need some time to get with it. However Splunk On-Call looks more featurable out-of-box and has iOS and Android apps while Grafana OnCall provides a general dashboard apps only.
