InterSystems IRIS Review

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I work most with InterSystems IRIS Interoperability. My job involves connecting the systems of branch stores with the headquarters. The biggest challenge is transforming a wide variety of data so that the receiving end can understand the message. It also involves data synchronization such as prices, which are used in all branches, mainly using service scheduling.

Pros

  • Ease of component reuse in interoperability
  • Even with a great database manager, it allows connecting to other data sources
  • The possibility of building an entire system within Object Script, from backend to frontend

Cons

  • Enhanced documentation, more comprehensive and user-friendly documentation, including detailed tutorials and examples
  • Improving compatibility and integrations with others programming languages
  • Introducing tools and techniques to optimize the performance of ObjectScript applications, such as profiling tools, performance monitoring utilities, and code optimization guidelines
  • A better compatibility with Python libraries

Likelihood to Recommend

As I deal with interoperability 99% of the time in my work, and I really enjoy the functionality of the tool, I would easily recommend this tool to large businesses that have many branches and need a tool to integrate and monitor all of them. Besides liking the fact that I don't need to manually establish a database connection, which makes development much easier.

Intersystems in health

Rating: 10 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Intersystems Iris to develop backend of The "Banque Nationale Alzheimer" a health data warehouse. The frontend is build with Angular and connect to the backend with a REST api. The application collects data from all medical consultations concerning Alzheimer or other degenerative brain diseases on French territory.

Pros

  • REST Api
  • Security
  • Users administration
  • On-board documentation

Cons

  • syntactic compatibility with other languages (for loop, tests)
  • The structure of the documentation is not obvious

Likelihood to Recommend

Iris is the solution to make professional developments particularly in the health sector.

Many professional tools are available and simplify use (HL7, FHIR).

The support provided by Intersystems is of a very high level with great involvement of stakeholders.

Productivity is therefore greatly increased compared to competing solutions.

A simple and efficient solution for data exchanges

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use InterSystems IRIS to help multiple entities communicate with each other. To exchange data and manage training registrations. All these exchanges concern standards used in all areas (ISO, etc...)Exchanges are done by files (sftp...) but above all by REST API.We use InterSystems IRIS because DB storage is really simple. We have the ability to simply transport a message from one point to another or to transform it before distributing it.

Pros

  • Storage in DB
  • Transfer and transform messages, flows
  • Graphic part for BP
  • Python development

Cons

  • Development but Python is natve in the new version
  • Visual Code extension to help developer (linter, formatter...)
  • ORM fonctionnalities

Likelihood to Recommend

InterSystems IRIS is really good for transporting messages and flows.

Object script is a simple object language. You don't need a lot of experience to get started.

InterSystems IRIS is not designed to create entire back/front applications but that is not its purpose. However, it can be integrated via API calls.

InterSystems IRIS Review

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I am using InterSystems IRIS in my daily BAU to implement the healthcare interfaces, deployment, and maintenance. I have been using the IRIS components adapters like TCP, File, SFTP, HTTP/HTTPS, SOAP, etc. And working on different types of messaging and transformation using DTLs and objectscript classes.

Pros

  • Utility classes
  • Library functions
  • Documentation and community

Cons

  • RTF base64 transformation
  • FHIR
  • The mandate features are not available in the older versions of the product and it is difficult to upgrade the product every version release for all hence latest features can't be available for all within our organization.

Likelihood to Recommend

InterSystems IRIS is easy to learn and move on from other technologies as well. It has good documentation and support for any issues.

A Great Interoperability Tool

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use InterSystems Iris and HealthConnect as our intergration engine between our EMR & our vendor systems. It allows us to take in millions of HL7 messages, translate those messages according to the needs of our company & vendors and send them on to their destinations within seconds. It also works for HL7v3, X12, and API (FHIR/Json) data.

Pros

  • It is very intuitive--navigation and understanding of the tool comes quickly
  • It is very flexible so you can easily customize it to operate in such a way that it fulfills your needs.
  • It is constantly expanding it's out of the box capabilities to provide more ease & access to different utilities.

Cons

  • The base code is in ObjectScript which can be quite the learning curve for individuals just starting out with the product.
  • The documentation is not always clear about how or what classes and built in functions are available for use.

Likelihood to Recommend

Intersystems IRIS is a really great tool for Interoperability. It has so many capabilities out of the box and then such a great developer community on top of that, that there are really no limits to what you can do in terms of data manipulation and translation. Personally I find it to be a great tool if you are looking for Interoperability software.
