Micro Focus Data Protector - a very nice backup tool

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Micro Focus Data Protector as a backup tool for our SQL Server, Oracle Database, Vmware, and file system environments.

Pros

  • Micro Focus Data Protector has a very customizable backup schedule, allowing to edit the flat file according to our security policies.
  • Micro Focus Data Protector has a very easy to use interface.
  • We can update its clients in a very easy way.

Cons

  • There are some hard-to-implement integrations, such as Office 365, Acrople virtual center, and Vmware granular recovery
  • Some hardware is discontinued, despite their factories still having support, like a tape library, for example.
  • Micro Focus Data Protector support has to improve a better service. Some open cases take too long to solve.

Return on Investment

  • During 14 years of using it, we never had a case in which some data needed couldn't be recovered. Positive
  • We still have difficulties implementing some integrations like Office 365 and Acropole. These environments are not being backed up. Negative
  • When we upgrade a version, we lose compatibility with some older clients and hardware. Negative

"How to promote continuous improvement in Micro Focus Data Protector's business and support strategy?"

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Basically, the product is used for protection needs related to critical, productive, and corporate information from different platforms and Applications. Some others have to do with billing information, appraisal of telephone calls, and projection in future areas of business. And about trade issues, there is really no such in fact, but at the moment there is a support renewal process, given by the migration of versions that are in progress.

Pros

  • Stability and reliability.
  • Friendly environment.
  • Wide range of compatibility with multiple platforms.
  • Easy to configure and install.

Cons

  • Increase the range of support for new platforms.
  • Improve the attention of support cases in terms of speed of attention.
  • Keep me better informed of the latest solution updates.

Return on Investment

  • Positive: it maintains the stability of backups and recoveries of critical information.
  • Negative: there are some other backup applications that exist in the institution and have gained ground on other platforms.
