The Most Compliant Online Survey

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I first came across REDCap in 2018 when I was doing a Course run by Vanderbilt University on Coursera.

Since then I have been using REDCap for developing public health surveys which are based on clinical validated libraries located within the platform. The swift access control management systems especially for group run surveys, ensures high data integrity and reliability. REDCap also offers respondents access to results following the same invitation link, this alone makes it the most transparent cloud based public health survey app.

Pros

  • It is very secure only people with right of access to the surveys can access specific functionalities such as for editing, read or analyze.
  • REDCap prioritizes privacy as such the app is designed around HIPAA protection policies. This helps to safeguard study respondents' personal identifying information.
  • REDCap has very robust analytics which helps to generate actionable insights while paying attention details such as missing variables and outliers.
  • Most public health have issues with sending active survey links but this is not the case with REDCap. All the links actually work, and its one link per respondent, once exhausted you cannot reuse it thereby reducing bias.

Cons

  • REDCap is generally the best app for public health and clinical trials for both the academia and for-profit organization. However it is poorly marketed much effort is placed on the academia side though organizations like the pharmaceuticals, hospitals, insurance etc., would be willing especially when they get hear about it.
  • REDCap needs to work on the user interface. It's kinda boring especially when designing surveys and when navigating for surveys
  • The FAQ must be shortened , sometimes the videos associated with FAQ seem long.

Likelihood to Recommend

REDCap surveys are very suitable for clinical trials and public health surveys.

It's less appropriate for market researches .

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

The whole Medical school is using REDCap for research data collection, management, analysis, and report. It helps researchers collect data, conduct surveys, and process them while maintaining HIPPA compliance throughout the data lifecycle.

Pros

  • Develop and conduct online survey easily
  • Allow back office data management securely

Cons

  • I don't really see many issues with REDCap.

Likelihood to Recommend

REDCap is best used for research survey data collection, study data, and workflow. It also gives a useful tool for researchers to manage, process, analyze, and report on the data. It is not intended for collaboration or special applications.

REDCap: A Revolution of Patient Management

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

In my previous role, REDCap was being used to store patient PHI and consultation data. We used it as a one-stop shop for any type of wellness appointment that our patients had including a health check, nutrition consult, fitness consult, tobacco cessation consult, etc. It allowed us as the healthcare professionals to get an overview of the patient's health record prior to meeting them one on one. This helped us established where the person may be in terms of readiness to change and how committed they may be to their health. As a company, we wanted to make sure that this information was NOT tied to their personal health record, and REDCap allowed us to do that.

Pros

  • I appreciate the ability to add/change items within a field that may be beneficial or detrimental to the patient.
  • I like the option to sort by year in the main information hub, as well as put specific dates of consultations & meetings within a patient profile.
  • Very easy learn and use!

Cons

  • Some of the reporting could be very confusing and inundated with information that was not necessary or needed. There were very specific parameters that you had to set in order to export the exact data that you were looking for.
  • In some cases, not all, it could take a very long time to get approval to make any sort of portal changes, such as adding a second date option or adding a field. Sometimes this would mean certain patients would have a specific type of record and others would be missing it.

Likelihood to Recommend

In a healthcare based setting, where you need to keep all of a patient's health history and documentation in one place, it is very well suited. I would also see if to be beneficial to keep track of participation in certain programs.

REDCap is great for research, but also so much more!

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use REDCap for so many different tasks across our company. Most obvious is for electronic data capture in our research studies. We can create forms for staff to fill out, as well as surveys to send directly to participants. We use it to record attestations for exceptions by creating survey forms and sending them to employees which then automatically creates a database as record. We use it as intake forms for new projects or studies. The possibilities are endless.

Pros

  • Customization. I can use HTML to change format but there are also a ton of built in functionality for branching logic, matrix configuration, slider scales, etc.
  • Security. HIPPA compliance is extremely important for medical research and REDCap ensures our data is safe.
  • Variety of use. Being able to send both surveys and create forms for internal use makes the use cases numerous.

Cons

  • Format options built in, instead of having to use HTML code.
  • User maintenance can be difficult with collaborators outside of your institution.

Likelihood to Recommend

Our main use has been for research studies. It allows HIPPA compliant data collection with a vast amount of customization options, branching logic to keep collection clean, and validation to ensure data collected can easily be analyzed. We can send surveys to participants in between visits and use forms for in person visits where a staff member is collecting the information.
