Empower Analytical Insights With Shiny

Rating: 9 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Shiny to collate data from disparate sources, transform and generate advanced analysis served through Shiny dashboards and R Markdown documents. R is one of two standards within our organisation's field, enabling us to learn and share within a wide community of interest. Additionally the continued support and development of packages enables us to utilise the latest improvements right now.

Pros

  • Data transformation.
  • Data visualisation.
  • Repeatable analytical pipelines.

Cons

  • Learning for beginners.

Likelihood to Recommend

Shiny is well suited where an organisation is looking to empower their analysts to minimise time spent on repetitive analysis by deploying repeatable analytical pipelines, but also looking for them to add greater value to the organisation by utilising more advanced analytical techniques. Ideally it is well suited where IT are on board and supportive of some of the more advanced features such as deploying R Shiny dashboards.

Shiny - a great tool for developing data visualizations on the cheap.

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Shiny in our labs to create data dashboards for a lay audience. It's a very effective tool for creating data visualizations for a lay audience. Essentially it allows data experts to create important visualizations that can be easily accessed by the end-users we are targeting. We use it frequently.

Pros

  • Data tables are appealing to look at.
  • Enables us to create trend indexes in an effective way.
  • Easy to integrate with the rest of my R syntax.

Cons

  • There's definitely a learning curve.
  • There's a lot of functionality such as HTML widgets that require more than just R experience.
  • There are a variety of tools available, but it can be tough to know where to start.

Likelihood to Recommend

I think that Shiny is a great tool for someone who wants to create data visualizations outside of Tableau Desktop or Power BI, which are both common in the data visualization industry. I think that it may be less suitable for folks who have the funds for Tableau or Power Bi licenses.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Shiny for the development of dashboards for monitoring indicators of many areas of the business, mostly commercial. This product has allowed us to provide better visibility of various aspects of the business thanks to the development of tools and web dashboards that allow access to many people within the organization.

Pros

  • Easy to develop with R
  • Flexibility when developing dashboards
  • Good documentation
  • Big community with a lot of examples

Cons

  • Easier ways to connect to data sources
  • Better access control for different roles in the organization
  • Video material that allows a better learning experience

Likelihood to Recommend

Shiny is very good for developing dashboards or web applications with specific functionalities. But it is not so easy to use to develop from scratch, it is always better to use another tool to have a general idea of what is expected of a dashboard and then develop the most specific functionalities in Shiny. It is much more flexible than other tools and that is why I consider it to be better for most cases, only that it is more complex to develop or has a longer learning curve.

Trying to advance R analysis with Shiny

Rating: 8 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Shiny is a very useful tool to share the analysis performed by the team when people need to interact with them. Very useful especially when different scenarios have been performed and the variable is a choice point. The receiver can compare and visualize them in an easy app/dashboard with Shiny.

Pros

  • Work with R Studio in a easy way
  • Build dynamic views working with variables
  • Easy to share

Cons

  • More aesthetic visuals
  • Complex for non-technical profiles

Likelihood to Recommend

It is very useful when you are working with R Studio for analyzing data and you need to share the outputs with colleagues or stakeholders. Especially useful for dynamic visuals based on a variable to show how different scenarios would be based on the decision variable. It is slightly complex for executive forums and to show key insights from the analysis as the final output, but very good during the analysis.

Shiny : How does it compares to other products on market

Rating: 4 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Shiny is a tool to create dynamic and interactive visualizations and that is how I have used it throughout with a few of my clients.

Pros

  • Dynamic visualization
  • Showcase interactive drop downs to choose from
  • Showcase sliders to select values

Cons

  • Shiny can be really time consuming to create visuals.
  • It needs excellent knowledge of R programming and coding skillset.
  • It still has a limited set of options to choose from.

Likelihood to Recommend

Shiny can be a complex tool for business intelligence needs, which requires a high level of coding skills and R programming knowledge base and a dashboard in Shiny can not be put together by a non-programmer business stakeholder. This tool is more suited for academic settings as the code can become lengthy and complex to integrate new enhancements.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We deliver dashboards from specific models generated in R for diverse researchers working in the Research and Development department.

There are models generated to model different diseases (called disease modeling) that include working with patient data (historical data).

This can include Rx, fluids, and medical notes. It involves different structures of data, such as text, columnar, time series, and images.

Pros

  • Interacting with ML models.
  • Deliver an online service.
  • Ability to select the best model.

Cons

  • Speed
  • Work in the cloud.
  • Working with images.

Likelihood to Recommend

Shiny is well suited for classical ML models that involve 1 specific type of data and the model uses a specific R library or package.

When the problem needs the application of several tools and libraries, Shiny could improve the speed of the model in production.

I really like how you can play with your models using real data.
