What is Siemens Simcenter?

Siemens Simcenter is a suite of computer-aided engineering (CAE) simulation, testing, and multidisciplinary optimization software developed by Siemens Digital Industries Software. Operating as the simulation and testing domain within the Siemens Xcelerator platform, Simcenter connects 3D computer-aided design (CAD), simulation modeling, and product lifecycle management (PLM) data into a continuous digital engineering thread.

Multiphase and thermal review of STAR CCM capabilities.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use STAR CCM+ to evaluate critical performance parameters such as pressure drop, particle capture efficiency, and Dust holding capacity for automotive Air filtration systems, as well as to predict temperature, power, and torque values for Headlights, taillights, and Polymer body panels. By using STAR CCM+, we are able to evaluate the thermal performance of lighting components and ensure that the materials being used are able to withstand the critical temperature conditions that the lighting systems operate in.

Pros

  • Meshing is very easy to do in STAR CCM+
  • Post-processing results is also very intuitive, making extracting results very enjoyable and easy to use.
  • The Advanced rendering options that are available in STAR CCM+ can really help make very well-generated videos that can make the simulation easy to visualize, share with non-technical engineers, and showcase the study done.

Cons

  • Multibody meshing controls can be a bit more easy to use.
  • Geometry clean up with the 3D CAD modifier could be a bit more easy to use.
  • Would prefer a dark mode option to be added to STAR CCM+

Return on Investment

  • I was able to reduce the pressure drop of an intake duct which resulted in improved efficiency of intake system.
  • Reduced the developed time for intake system by evaluating dust capture efficiency and dust holding capacity using simulation, which was previously done through prototype and physical testing.
  • Evaluated the increase in part temperature due to sunload on a polymer part. This helped us in material selection for the part.

Why STAR-CCM.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are Engineering Solutions and Service providers, and we project STARCCM+ as one of the leading tools used in various application areas ranging from Automotive, Aerospace, Energy, Renewable Energy, Marine, and Consumer Electronics. The Physics that can be modeled include a wide variety ranging from Aerodynamics, Hydrodynamics, Heat Transfer & Thermal Management, Multiphase Flow, Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI), Combustion & Reacting Flows, Aeroacoustics, and Electrochemistry.

Pros

  • Automated workflows for optimization using CAD and Flow parameters.
  • FSI and Aeroacoustics.
  • Multiphase Flow modeling along with Rheology.
  • Template-based Simulation for shorter runtimes.
  • Detailed User Guide with A range of tutorials for every physics.

Cons

  • To include more Structural solvers to encompass the Entire multi-physics capabilities.

Return on Investment

  • We, as a company, have seen the turnaround time to complete a design decision go from 6 months to 2 months due to automation of workflow and HPC scalability.
  • As cloud-based access is available now, Investment in Hardware is also reduced.

Very handy

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I like the new interface; the icons are very understandable and useful. And we don't need to continuously press the ctrl button on the keyboard while panning and turning the geometry. I'm cleaning geometries and meshing them quickly, which needs analysis and running smoothly. HyperWorks made my work easier and faster. For meshing, we are using it in our department all the time.

Pros

  • Taking midsurfaces much better
  • Meshing is more easy
  • Recreating and building meshes good
  • Sketch tools is not bad

Cons

  • Extend surfaces need to improve
  • Some skills are not working well sometimes like patch, cross extend

Simcenter STAR-CCM+ Review

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I'm the sole user for that product, but of course, the requirements and the design comes from other teams. And then I carry out the simulation. So I carry out the task with Star-CCM+ and then I give my verdict to those teams, along with any suggestions to improve our technology and products.

Pros

  • Meshing, for instance, it's very easy to mesh, try different approaches to meshing. Traditionally that's a very difficult job, but in STAR-CCM+ it makes it very easy and very reliable. Post-processing also is very nice and in all the modeling, the physics that you can carry out and you can simulate is also very, very nice. I tried to move to the priorities that does a good job. All in all, it's a very good software.

Cons

  • Maybe a little bit on the automation side and if you want to script something, if you want to automate procedures, that happens through every simulation round that you have. That part could be a little bit cumbersome right now, depending on the operating system that you use.
  • Introducing the software on other platforms like Mac OSS.

Return on Investment

  • I can't think of anything but positive of course. I mean, we've been improving our products, we've been using this to test less to make sure that our products will meet the requirements and meet the objectives that we have. And I've never seen a case where it has been proven otherwise. So yeah, it's been great for us.
