What is Voicemeter?
Voicemeeter is a virtual audio mixer designed to manage audio sources on Windows PCs. It can handle physical inputs, such as microphones, and audio from applications, including professional ASIO-based software. This enables users to mix their voice with music players, browsers, web radios, video games, and audio from digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Cubase, Ableton Live, or Pro Tools simultaneously for Skype calls or VOIP/recording workflows.
By supporting multiple audio interfaces (MME, KS, WaveRT, Direct-X, and ASIO), Voicemeeter acts as an audio bridge between applications. It allows ASIO-based software to utilize Windows audio device drivers (e.g., MME or WDM) and vice versa. This ensures compatibility across different setups.
As an audio mixer, Voicemeeter can combine three input devices (two physical and one virtual) and route them to three output devices (two physical and one virtual) through two buses (A & B). This versatility opens up various possibilities:
Mixing voice and music for Skype or Google Voice to create live podcasts or radio programs.
Using two USB headsets on one computer for online education.
Playing video games in 5.1 surround sound while keeping the microphone active for team communication.
Recording tutorials with high-quality audio software.
Capturing conferences or interviews in multichannel formats for post-production.
Integrating multiple audio applications and recording live performances using a DAW.
Voicemeeter also supports multichannel recording via ASIO, offering up to eight channels from its virtual output. Its master section includes features like mix-down (converting 5.1/7.1 to stereo), stereo repeat (duplicating stereo across multiple channels), and composite recording for multichannel input.
The software includes VBAN functionality for sending/receiving audio across local networks using a UDP protocol designed for high-quality PCM audio streaming. Additionally, VoicemeeterRemote.dll enables advanced control through macro buttons, allowing users to automate tasks like muting strips or activating push-to-talk functions.
