Overall Satisfaction with Altium Designer

We design and manufacture electronics for UX-rich vending machines. I'm the senior electronics designer in the Eng department. Altium Designer helps us all the way through from generating concepts that can be easily communicated through mock PCBs and diagrams to designing the actual electronics and being able to generate beautiful manufacturing information through Draftman.

Pros

  • Schematics with hierarchy
  • High speed pairs tunning (intra/inter length, impedance) with x-signals
  • Beautiful manuf documentation with Draftman
  • Very easy interactive routing
  • 3d support for layout

Cons

  • For schematic symbols, I would like some kind of assistance that can generate basic parts very quickly without actually drawing (rectangular connectors, diodes, transistors, etc)
  • We are building now the first very high performance (AI capable) computer for vending machines, and the process is being very smooth thanks to Altium Designer. Difficult for me to assess ROI, but will be a breakout point for the company.
Very intuitive, mostly in layout view. It just feels like drawing.
Improved Eng -> business communication
Improved Eng -> manufacturing house communication
Improved Eng to Eng communication
Improved sync with Mechs
Can't think now of designing without it
We do reviews through Altium 365. We are still using it in a very limited way (I.e. we still use local libs, and github for backup)
I always thought of Altium Designer as a more intuitive tool. Also makes PCB design more fun. Don't know why, it just happens.

I worked mostly in start-ups and medium size organizations, I think Altium Designer adapts very very well in those. Price is OK, support is great, and the product is fantastic. I still struggle a bit keeping a centralized lib of components.
