Overall Satisfaction with Altium Designer

Altium Designer is used for all stages our Development Process in HW area. From requirements definition in A365 System & Requirements Portal to Deplyoment, version, sch & layout, manufacturing files, etc. We also use Altium Designer to create our BOMs, our revision tasks with the new A365 tool, to perform thermal and signal integrity simulations as well.

Pros

  • Integrates Sch, Library, Constrain Manager, Layout, Gerber, and everything in the same tool
  • The graphical environment keeps being the best in class.
  • Altium Designer make easy what competitors make difficult.

Cons

  • Extra tool to make hyper realistics 3D view.
  • Integrates AI for library creation
  • Make the posibility to create schemes thought text.
  • Altium Designer is no cheap now, so it is not accesible for everyone.
  • Altium Designer should have a special license for individuals or freelances.
Everything is easy in Altium Designer, even a thermal simulation with Keyshight tool or PDN Analyzer, or just a impedance calculator. Everything is made easy for the users. In other platforms, make a simulation or even some calculations for controlled impedance is a heavy work. This is very appreciated for engineers.
We are using Altium Designer since 12 years ago so everyone is familiarized with the software and the environment. The environments has no change in last versions so this make easier to introduce new colleagues and give them training about Altium Designer. We have developed our own libraries and templates, so now it is very fast to start a project and move forward on it.
This tool is esential for us for many reasons. Principal is that we can make revisions with few engineers using a web browser instead Altium Designer, so this make even easier to people or engineers who are not familiarized with Altium Designer's environment. This is extensible to review Requirements, schemes, layout, library.
The advantage of KiCAD and EasyEDA versus Altium Designer is that KiCAD and EasyEDA are free. Even so, Altium Designer is more powerful than competitors in terms of integrability, easy of use and powerful tools. For example, in Siemens EDA software there is no tool for aligments components or distribute components in a board... This is just an example.

Altium Designer is well suited in any PCB Design application. Probably is weaker in aerospace industry where some features is required. In this industry, customer usually want to have well separated Scheme (Design Engineers) from Layout (CAD Engineers) and Requirements (System Engineers) and Constrains definition.

Anyway, Altium Designer is suitable for almost whatever application.
