Overall Satisfaction with Bloomberg Terminal

We use the Bloomberg terminal to check market prices, news, and economic data. We also use the Excel function from Bloomberg for most of our spreadsheets, including fundamental-related data for public companies and economic data. The product addresses the market information and availability of financial and accounting indicators problems in a timely manner.

Pros

  • Check companies' multiples (NTM P/E or NTM EV/EBITDA) in an easy way by using the GF function.
  • Provide a quick overview of economic indicators with the ECTS function.
  • Provide a comprehensive view of shareholders for companies with the HDS function.

Cons

  • Companies' expectations (MODL function) have lots of room for improvement. It doesn't allow for use in valuation (GF function) and doesn't have a good enough historical data compared to competitors such as Visible Alpha.
  • The BQL function is very confusing, has no effective learning materials, and not enough training from the Bloomberg sales rep, in my opinion.
  • FA function lacks Non-GAAP adjustments for the non-GAAP numbers provided by companies.
  • The terminal is an important part of our research process. We use the supply chain function for example when researching new companies.
  • The terminal allows us to have a quick overview of past performance for stocks during earnings season (ERN function).
  • The terminal is very good at synthesizing the main industry indicators in the Bloomberg Intelligence functions for each industry.
It's a good product, it has a lot of functionalities, and the information is accurate. However, it could be easier to use, particularly the Excel formulas such as BQL. The third-party research functionalities are also a bit slow and difficult to search for when using keyword search.
Visible Alpha and AlphaSense are better for fundamental research of publicly listed companies. The Visible Alpha Excel plug-in is easy to use, the financial KPIs are easy to find, and there's a long historical data availability. Whereas the AlphaSense AI functionality is incredibly useful when researching companies because it allows for searches in broker research and regulatory filings using AI.

Do you think Bloomberg Terminal delivers good value for the price?

No

Are you happy with Bloomberg Terminal's feature set?

Yes

Did Bloomberg Terminal live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Bloomberg Terminal go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Would you buy Bloomberg Terminal again?

Yes

Well-suited as a monitoring tool for market prices, economic indicators, and news. Less appropriate for fundamental research and analysis. Other tools, such as AlphaSense and Visible Alpha, are better/more user-friendly for research usage or manipulation of financial statements, either because the platform itself is easier to use or because the Excel add-in function is simpler, less confusing.
