Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Catalyst 8000 Edge Platforms

Act as voice gateways supporting third party integrations for pstn or over heard paging systems. Our customers typically need also these voice gateways to provide SRST services for remote sites with sizes from 10 end user endpoints to bigger sites with 75 endpoints and more complex call flows and hint groups

Pros

  • Small footprint
  • Software capabilities

Cons

  • Motherboard socket for PVDM modules
  • Voice services
  • DMVPN
  • Unaware of these
  • Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)
The Catalyst 8000 Edge Platforms are lacking the versatility of the previous ISR4k series in terms of connectivity and expansion slots, mainly on the lower tier versions (8200 vs 4321 and 4331). We had no problems with the traditional ISR 400 series and we applied them to multiple scenarios. We have not been that lucky with the 8200 and sometimes we have to quote a 8300, increasing the quote too much and risking the proposal

Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)
They are well suited for customers and scenarios where they need voice services on-site unless they need analog integration (using FXS or FXO ports). On those scenarios, in my experience the 8200 is lacking the slots to support the analog integrations, and at the same time, DSP shared resources using a PVDM module. The removal of three motherboard sockets for PVDM had caused issues for some customers where a 8300 was too overpriced for just being able to provide those DSP resources and have a simple analog integration.
