Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Catalyst Switches
- Catalyst 3850 Series
Cisco is a leader in the networking industry. We utilize Cisco Catalyst switches in instances we need guaranteed reliability and dependability. Using Cisco Catalyst switches I can say with confidence that the product is more than likely to provide a high level of uptime. In addition, Cisco IOS is popular among network engineers and the pool of talent that know Cisco is greater than other organizations.
- Reliability.
- Excellent feature set.
- Cutting edge of networking.
- Higher pricing.
- Higher skillset required to effectively manage.
- No other cons that I can think of and the 2 above aren't necessarily cons.
- Limited downtime.
- Longevity of devices means buying less devices in the long run.
- More features allows for greater network tools and security.
Cisco does have a higher skillset to manage via IOS command line, however you get greater control. The requirement for a higher skillset also means a more seasoned engineer is working on your network. The pool of talent that knows Cisco IOS is vast so there are plenty of options in terms of management. IOS provides granular control over network configuration and speed of deployment.
Juniper is another great product in terms of quality. The pool of talent that knows Cisco is greater however which is an advantage for Cisco. I do like Juniper's ability to confirm the commit, allowing for rollback of configuration if there are issues. Both are good quality product and there are more engineers that know Cisco however.
