Reliable Switches for Growing Networks
Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Catalyst Switches
We mainly use Cisco Catalyst Switches in our organization especially the 2960 models at the distribution level to manage and run our office network operations. We have quite a large network setup with over 320 employees and these switches work as the backbone that keeps us connected. Over the years we expanded to a new floor and employee number increased by hundred. Honestly, we were a bit concerned at the beginning if the existing switches could handle that load but surprisingly, they managed to keep the operation going on without any hamper.
Pros
- One thing I really like about the Catalyst series is how stable and well functional they are! We have been using the catalyst 2960 for around 10 years and they are still in operation and running smoothly without any noticeable issues.
- The performance is well balanced. Even after expanding our office and adding more devices the switches handled the increased load without any performance drop.
- Configuring the switches are the fun part. Our team is well aware of cisco devices and as we have other cisco networking devices at our premise, configuration and daily management of these switches are quite easy for us.
- The CLI of cisco devices are quite user friendly lets us monitor traffic and check port status to quickly identify if any port is causing issues which ultimately makes the troubleshooting more fun and easy.
Cons
- I love the CLI and honestly i feel comfortable working in Cisco CLI than many other GUI, but the issue is these days CLI is getting obsolete gradually and people moving forward to graphical user interface control and management which is quite easier for the beginner. Many catalyst models lack in GUI feature i mean they do have GUI functionalities, but the user friendliness is not up to the mark compared to other vendors at the market right now.
- Cisco is best at what it does and some actually consider them as the king in the network market, but the pricing is a huge drawback. I would suggest leveraging the pricing of the Cisco Catalyst Switches which would make them more affordable to their loyal customers.
- Our overall ROI is positive. We have been using them for more than ten years and we hardly faced any major issues it true that few switches failed but compared to the long years we are satisfied.
- They also supported our business expansion when we added more employees, without increasing the backbone switches which saved a lot of money for sure!
