Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Catalyst Switches

Cisco Catalyst Switches are used in our organization to provide a high-performance, secure, and reliable network infrastructure. They support critical business operations by enabling seamless connectivity across offices, data centers, and remote locations. These switches help address key challenges such as network congestion, security threats, and scalability needs and desire.

Pros

  • Stack wise
  • Easy to deploy

Cons

  • Software upgrade can be a challenge
  • It would be nice with a consistent CLI across Cisco products
  • They are a bit pricey compared to Juniper
  • They are very stable
Implement end user VPN by getting the AnyConnect to work properly with certificates and Azure entra id. This will provide a very flexible experience for end users as they have a single sign on which they can use across the entire company. This paried with Cisco ISE will provide a uniform experience when users are mobile and at the office
Cisco's hybrid work solutions, including AnyConnect, have significantly enhanced secure remote access for your organization. AnyConnect ensures employees can securely connect to corporate resources from anywhere while maintaining robust security through multi-factor authentication, endpoint compliance checks, and encrypted connections. This has helped address challenges such as secure remote access, workforce mobility, and IT management by providing a seamless and reliable user experience.
Using Cisco AnyConnect to support our hybrid work model has provided a secure and seamless remote access experience for employees. It has improved productivity by enabling reliable connectivity to corporate resources from anywhere while maintaining strong security protocols. Employees appreciate the flexibility of hybrid work without compromising data security, and IT teams have benefited from centralized management and visibility into network access.
I would choose Junipers switches over Cisco as they provide a much more uniform experience. We choose Cisco to keep all asses the same and because we are used to buy Cisco. The skill set of the network team is primary Cisco and for that reason we stick with the well known platform.

Cisco Catalyst switches have been workin the same way for many years and you are familiar with the platform when you access a very old box or a new one. is the same. The modern switches are easy to install and operate and they are very feature rich. Particular the new EPVN features are interesting and can provide a very stable access network.

Cisco Hybrid Work

  • Working from anywhere (e.g., coffee shop, airport)
  • Working from an office or other company space
  • Working from home
We are very far in our process to implement work anywhere.

Cisco Catalyst Addtional Questions

We have always bought Cisco and know the products
We have templates which can easily be adapted to newer versions of Catalyst.
There are so many product lines and some of the overlap. It can be confusing
We have support through a vendor Consica and it is VERY slow and troublesome

Using Cisco Catalyst Switches

15 - In our organization, Cisco Catalyst Switches are primarily used by the network and infrastructure teams. While the entire company benefits from the connectivity they provide, the direct users are the IT professionals responsible for managing, configuring, and maintaining the network. This includes network engineers, administrators, and infrastructure teams who rely on Catalyst Switches to ensure a secure, high-performance, and scalable network environment.
4 - Supporting Cisco Catalyst Switches requires network engineers, administrators, and security specialists with skills in networking, VLANs, routing, QoS, and security policies. They configure, monitor, and troubleshoot switches to ensure performance, security, and scalability. Knowledge of automation, network protocols, and infrastructure integration is also essential for effective management. There is a quite steep learning curve.
  • Implement new very stable features like EVPN
  • Have one hardware platform across all offices
  • In access networks across offices
I would rate the likelihood of renewing the use of Cisco Catalyst Switches as a 9. They have proven to be reliable, secure, and scalable for our network needs, offering excellent performance and strong support for our infrastructure. The only potential factor affecting the decision would be any evolving business requirements or emerging technologies.
The price point is rather high compared to other vendors.

Evaluating Cisco Catalyst Switches and Competitors

Yes - We replaced older generation Catalyst Switches with the newer models to improve network performance, scalability, and security. The older switches lacked the advanced features and capabilities required to handle growing network demands, such as higher throughput, better support for automation, and enhanced security protocols. The newer Catalyst models offer more efficient traffic management, better energy efficiency, and improved performance for modern applications, which made upgrading essential for maintaining optimal network operations and future-proofing our infrastructure.
If we had to do it again, we would place more emphasis on testing the switches in real-world scenarios before making a final decision. While we evaluated the features and specifications, hands-on testing would have provided deeper insights into performance, ease of integration, and how well the switches handle our specific network workloads. Additionally, we would involve cross-functional teams, including security and operations, earlier in the evaluation process to ensure that all potential requirements and use cases are thoroughly addressed. A more detailed cost-benefit analysis considering long-term support, scalability, and potential for future upgrades would also be prioritized.4o mini

Cisco Catalyst Switches Support

ProsCons
None
Slow Resolution
Poor followup
Less knowledgeable
Problems left unsolved
Not kept informed
Escalation required
Difficult to get immediate help
Need to explain problems multiple times
Support doesn't seem to care
Slow Initial Response
We did not purchase premium support directly from Cisco as we are receiving comprehensive support through our vendor, Consica. This arrangement provides us with the necessary expertise and timely assistance, which aligns with our needs and budget. The support from Consica covers everything from troubleshooting to advanced configurations, ensuring smooth operations for our network.
Unfortunately, we have not experienced exceptional support from Cisco for this product. While the product itself performs well, we have encountered some challenges with support that have made it difficult to resolve issues in a timely manner. These challenges have led us to rely more on our vendor, Consica, for troubleshooting and solutions.
I gave the support for Cisco Catalyst Switches a rating of 2 because the response times and resolution effectiveness have been disappointing. We’ve faced difficulties in getting timely assistance for troubleshooting issues, and the support provided has not always addressed our concerns thoroughly. This has led to delays and frustration when dealing with critical network issues. As a result, we've relied more on our vendor, Consica, for support rather than Cisco directly.

Using Cisco Catalyst Switches

ProsCons
Like to use
Feel confident using
Unnecessarily complex
Difficult to use
Requires technical support
Not well integrated
Inconsistent
Slow to learn
Cumbersome
Lots to learn
  • They are similar to older generations catalyst switches which makes it easy to operate
  • Moving around on differnet Cisco platforms, they are ALL different which makes it very frustrating to operate.
Given your experience, I would rate the overall usability of Cisco Catalyst Switches around a 6. While they offer robust features, the complexity of configuration and management can make them more difficult to use compared to Juniper. The learning curve and configuration details may require more time and effort to master, especially for users accustomed to more straightforward systems.
