Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Catalyst Switches

Catalyst switches are used in our environment as our campus switches as access and distribution layer switches to provide steady connection back to our core routers. We also use 9300 Catalyst switches to provide many access ports for our SD-WAN sites and can add them to switch stacks for redundancy.

Pros

  • Has many access ports
  • has the option to be added to a switch stack
  • has quick upgrade times

Cons

  • Catalyst switches could have separate control planes so that upgrading one switch from a switch stack won't reboot the whole switch stack
  • Catalyst switches could have more ports
  • Catalyst switches could have some added firewall and malware protection software
  • We use over 300 Catalyst switches for all our remote branches
  • Catalyst switch stacks are usefully for providing redundancies
  • Catalyst UPOE switches provide the extra power through power over Ethernet connections
