Cisco Catalyst Switches
Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Catalyst Switches
We use them everywhere. We use them at the access layer, the collapsed distribution layer, and more. We have always used the platform in all of its iterations but currently we are moving towards having the entire 9000 series across the board. They address our design concerns, split vendor setup issues, and capacity management.
Pros
- traffic handling and QoS policing
- software upgrade ease
- easy management
Cons
- code bugs REQUIRING code changes
- code bugs REQUIRING reloads
- a mechanism to provide more redundancy or mitigate impact during a code change for access layer switches
- The redundancy options on the non-access layer devices keeps uptimes higher which translates to service continuity.
- The capacity and segmentation options enables a more secure and customizable environment.
- The hot scalability enables us to add more endpoints in a live environment and expanding the existing footprint without impacting others.
- Webex Meetings

- Webex Calling
- Cisco Meraki Wireless Access Point
The challenges are always streamlining and consolidation. It is difficult when a company spans many states and data centers to find a one size fits all approach but I think we have as we have moved towards the AnyConnect model. We also leverage Webex heavily not to mention the other suite of Cisco products.
Much of our staff is spread out across the country so having a consistent solution everywhere certainly helps accomplish more of our goals across the board.
It has enabled better work and life balance, better and consistent performance, centralized access management and also management of the software involved in establishing connectivity.
We certainly love the configuration consistency between the platforms now as IOS XE becomes a consistent backbone. The Cisco Catalyst Switches are like everything else and become a natural extension configuration and support wise of everything else. I personally do not have much experience with other brands of switches but the ones I have touched are much more difficult to manage.
