Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Room Series

We use the Room Series for bi-directional remote classes and webconferencing. We currently have a single 4K camera above the two TVs connected to the Room Series, but this will be upgraded to two cameras and 4 TV in the near future. The system works very well currently in its limited use case but I suspect that for true remote classroom experience, the single camera system will be found inadequate. The reason for this is because it is incapable of display the instructor, the classroom with students and the annotation board at the same time. We have had some compression issues in the past with video streams when the connection becomes slower but this is to be expected. Finally, when we use this system as a SIP to connect to the zoom service, while it works really well, the dial interface incorporated with the Room Series is arcane and difficult to master. For example, sometimes we need to be able to change the view to gallery instead of active speaker. To get this to work, we have to go back to the dial menu and punch in a bunch of options to make it work. This is very cumbersome.

Pros

  • Integration with Zoom
  • Bidirectional communication for classroom
  • Peripheral integration (tablets and remotes)

Cons

  • SIP dial-in service is arcane
  • Better compression codecs to avoid video and audio artefacting
  • Better tutorials on Webex. Many of these we made ourselves after trial and error
  • Positive impact: remote learning
  • Positive impact: remove the need for additional equipment for webconferencing (Laptop running zoom, for example)
  • Positive impact: relatively easy to use and setup
Their online resources are not as useful or well annotated as we would like them to be. There is some documentation but it is not written in a manner that is usable by the average-joe. This needs improvement. We ended up putting the Room Series on Cisco's update service where the services are managed directly by our organization's web update service. This ended up solving a lot of the codec and stability problems.
There is a considerable amount of tech know-how needed to really make the Room Series work for most scenarios. This might be a due to the stark increase in remote based productivity as a result of COVID-19 and quarantine protocols. But CISCO support and documentation have not caught up the increase in adoption of these technologies. As a result, only personnel with substantial technical expertise are able to really make these systems work for the use-cases that is most relevant to our setting here at Clemson University.

Cisco Webex Experience

We found most of these features to be a detriment than a benefit. For example, the speaker tracking was very distracting to our audiences on the other side. It was much easier to leave the view focus on the room overall. The microphone detection for speaker view was not very accurate and more importantly responsive. Because of the time lag present when switching between speakers, it creates rubber banding that ends up being very distracting.
We have used Zoom meetings, and Microsoft Teams. Both of these see extensive usage with our organization.
I think the Webex portal is useful for communicating with different departments within the same organization. Webex Teams module is very useful to create purpose built teams on the fly. It is very flexible and versatile for management of and communication within teams in rapidly evolving environments and goals.

Using Cisco Room Series

40 - They are a team of researchers, students, staff and faculty. They function as the research division for our organization.
3 - Sys admin, network engineers, and software developers.
  • Organize meetings
  • Communicate with collaborators
  • Attend educational activities
  • Screen sharing for presentations
  • Communication portal
  • Emergency messaging center
  • Remote assistance
By the time we are up for an upgrade, this particular series of products might not even been in the market. The typical product cycle for such products in the market are about 5 years. More importantly, the codec supported by such devices may also change by the time we are up for an upgrade. Even so, getting this system to a level of functionality we require was a frustrating ordeal that I do not look forward to during the next cycle.

Evaluating Cisco Room Series and Competitors

Yes - Cisco SX20 system
  • Scalability
  • Integration with Other Systems
  • Ease of Use
Ease of Use: We really wanted this to be a straightforward product to use for organizing meetings, and attend remote classes at our organization. It unfortunately was not as easy to use as we were led to believe. There was a bit of a learning curve. Fortunately, we have a decent support team on prem to help with troubleshooting.
I would change to a product that interfaced better with our room scale audio solution. The microphone systems constantly interfere with each other on this Room series and it is not capable of intelligently adjusting levels of audio feed across our microphone array. I would probably go with a system that is capable of true bi-directional classroom scale solution

Cisco Room Series Support

ProsCons
Kept well informed
Poor followup
Less knowledgeable
Problems left unsolved
Escalation required
Difficult to get immediate help
Need to explain problems multiple times
Yes, and I regret doing so. I am glad it was only for one year. It was complete waste of time and money to opt for Cisco's premium support. The level 1 techs (the first tier you connect to) are not very good at conceptualizing the problems we try to communicate to them. So, escalation is almost a necessity. It is easier for us to troubleshoot by doing our own research and reading forums of other users with similar configurations and problems.
There was a time when one of our creston HDMI multiplexers failed to replicate signal to our repeater TVs. The support correctly identified the problem and provided the solution in an uncharacteristically rapid fashion.

Using Cisco Room Series

ProsCons
Like to use
Relatively simple
Easy to use
Well integrated
Quick to learn
Requires technical support
Lots to learn
  • Volume control
  • Initiating a Cisco Webex call
  • Integration services like Zoom and Teams
  • Camera control
Yes - This is probably the best feature of the Room Series. Without the tablet, the remote control of the Room Series is very cumbersome to use.
