Overall Satisfaction with Db2

We have explored the usage of Db2 as a relational database for hosting our Financial data, as it well integrates with receiving CSV files, which most of the Financial department rely on. Db2 was considered as the analysts are more comfortable with using standard SQL and in particular Db2 Big SQL, which facilitate their day-to-day queries. On top of that, it was also interesting exploring it for AI applications, as they would require more scalability capabilities.

Pros

  • Scalability
  • Security
  • Integration with different sources
  • Support for hybrid cloud deployments

Cons

  • Training materials and documentation (due to shortage of IBM-savvy engineers)
  • Upgrades require additional team planning, to ensure they go smoothly
  • The focus on security make it easier to maintain and with less engineers
  • Upgrades have required more time than anticipated, most likely due to lack of experienced engineers, but there was no negative impact on the business

Do you think Db2 delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Db2's feature set?

Yes

Did Db2 live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Db2 go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Db2 again?

No

It is best suited for scenarios where security cannot be compromised (such as, financial systems). This is something that Db2 caters for and why it was considered in our use case. Its recoverability capabilities are also important to note, again due to some systems requiring availability 24/7. In general though, it is an Enterprise solution, meaning that the licensing cost can be hard to shoulder for smaller companies, which coupled with the lack of trained engineers on it, make it less attractive to more mainstream solutions

Scalability and Accessibility

We have particularly appreciated the integration with Apache Iceberg and with other, less refined, sources of data (such as CSV and exports from spreadsheets-management tools). For what concerns deployments, the focus was primarily for our financial systems and at that we were testing different options, so while it was clear that the capability is there, we could not take advantage of it fully

Db2 Reliability

It's a bit difficult to evaluate this area as we did not encounter any issues while working with it, so in general I would say that Db2 was always available when we needed it; giving a higher rating without having faced any errors in this case would not reflect correctly our experience.
