Overall Satisfaction with Dell EqualLogic PS Series

We employ multiple Storage Area Networks (SANs) throughout our infrastructure, spanning various environments. Specifically, in our testing environment, the Dell EqualLogic PS Series server functions as our SAN solution. However, in our production environment, where we require over 100 TB of storage space, we faced limitations that prevented us from deploying this particular SAN due to space constraints.
  • Easy to configure
  • Simple ISCSI connectivity
  • Easy to provision LUNs and present it to ESXi
  • The Dell EqualLogic PS Series series I utilize is not capable of being upgraded to Fiber Channel
  • Given that all disks are SAS, the likelihood of disk failure during power issues is significant
  • Not many security features
  • Few years back we experienced a severe power failure that resulted in multiple reboots of the storage system within a single day. When attempting to reconnect to the storage, we were confronted with the devastating discovery that the RAID configuration had been lost. To compound the issue, a staggering eight out of the twelve disks had been flagged as faulty. The situation quickly escalated into a nightmare as we embarked on the arduous task of recovering the critical data. It was a challenging and stressful ordeal, highlighting the importance of robust contingency plans and data backup strategies in mitigating such catastrophic events.
As the company initially operated on a smaller scale, we opted for Dell EqualLogic PS Series storage solutions, primarily because our data storage needs were modest. However, as the company expanded and demands grew, it became evident that the Dell EqualLogic PS Series system struggled to cope with the demands of enterprise-level applications. This instability posed significant challenges to our operations. Consequently, we made the strategic decision to relegate the EqualLogic storage to non-production environments. While it served adequately in smaller capacities, its limitations became increasingly apparent as our organization evolved, prompting the transition to more robust storage solutions better suited to our growing needs

Do you think Dell EqualLogic PS Series delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Dell EqualLogic PS Series's feature set?

No

Did Dell EqualLogic PS Series live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Dell EqualLogic PS Series go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Dell EqualLogic PS Series again?

No

Given its IO performance and bandwidth limitations, deploying this system in an enterprise-level setting would be impractical. However, it can effectively serve in non-production environments where demands are lower. Despite its unsuitability for heavy-duty tasks, the system offers valuable features such as straightforward configuration for data replication to its array partner. This replication capability enhances data backup processes, providing a reliable solution for safeguarding critical information in less demanding operational scenarios.
