Overall Satisfaction with DraftSight

We use DraftSight for the design of flat sheet metal parts to be cut using a CNC plasma system.
  • Works very well for simple shapes commonly found in many production and one-off parts.
  • Ease of use and intuitive software make it quick to create design files.
  • Copy and past functionality between different windows/files isn't well established.
  • Some "snap to" features can be too intrusive.
  • Not the program for creating complex 3D shapes, but that's not really its intended use.
  • Its low cost allows us to produce flat pattern parts without significant markup for expensive software. The more reasonable cost allows us to more effectively capture the efficiency advantages of using the cutting system.
Obviously, it's much less powerful, but DraftSight still is useful for us.
For 2D flat parts that lack unusual shapes or curves that require tight tolerances, DraftSight works great. For oddly-shaped 2D parts, or where 3D modeling is highly beneficial, DraftSight is less useful.
