Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Duo Security provides a two-factor authentication security measure to our online resources. Many of our resources contain personal or private information, including patient information for hospital employees. Duo is a user-friendly application that seamlessly connects users to their work accounts using their phones as another layer of security. All employees at the University of Utah are required to use Duo to log into their accounts.

Pros and Cons

When attempting to log into an account, Duo sends the two-factor authentication request immediately.
The Duo application is well organized and easy to follow, making it easy for users with any technical experience to master the application.

The extra step to log into a work account using Duo is unpopular among many employees simply because it requires a little more time to verify the users' identity.
Logging into a mobile site that requires Duo authentication does not always progress to completion. This may be a site-specific problem, rather than a Duo problem, but it occurs nonetheless because of the requirement to use Duo.

Return on Investment

Unauthorized access to work accounts containing sensitive information is almost non-existent where employees correctly use their log-in information with Duo.
IT departments, unfortunately, have to deal with more troubleshooting requests from Duo users than before using Duo, but the trade-off is worthwhile.

Alternatives Considered

Duo is by far the easiest to use, the most versatile, and the most trusted two-factor authentication service that I have used. Duo is seamlessly integrated with virtually all online accounts that require two-factor authentication. This app makes this added security a short and simple process.

Support Rating

I have never needed to use support for Duo Security aside from the initial support, setting up my account with my employer. Our IT specialists were familiar with the application, and it was easy to get help and learn how to use this product.
