Overall Satisfaction with F5 BIG-IP DNS

Today we use it for Global Availability and HA across our multiple cloud regions and equinix facilities both internally and externally.

Pros

  • Being able to create topology load balancing is very easy and straightforward
  • It works really well to detect which region or state you are in to be able to load balance to the closest location

Cons

  • We struggle with the fact that F5 BIG-IP DNS uses the LDNS. Today we use infoblox and we are able to tag ECS data so that the F5 can see the true source of the client but it would be cool if somehow that would work without having to forward.
  • One thing that I also struggle with is the time stamps and adding new GTMS into the cluster. I have wiped out my deployment before because the timestamps we're wrong.
  • It has created an easy environment for us to onramp and load balance based on region into our GCP instances. This provides a faster experience for our customers increasing sales.
It is easy to use and effective. The GUI is simple and easily understandable.

Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (Cisco ACI)
I would recommend it in a heartbeat. Everything I have done with F5 BIG-IP DNS has been easy. Adding F5 BIG-IP DNS to the server groups and automatically detecting LTM VIPs is so easy and works like a charm. Creating wide IPs is simple and effective.

Using F5 BIG-IP DNS

15 - 15 people use it regularly from the management perspective. we have all of our external DNS going through the GTM so it gets used heavily in that sense. Right now everyone managing the GTM are on the network team. Everyone else uses it for HA on all of their applications. We use it for order processing, invoicing, etc
15 - Today we are all Network Administrators or Engineers that support Big-ip DNS. I have been the SME for DNS for many years and have helped train others on how to use it and set it up. DNS is quite easy to manage once its in place and you do not need a high skill set to poke your way around it. That is one thing I like so much about it. Its simple to navigate and setup.

  • We are looking at using it on XC for an even more resilient product
We use this heavily and it is one of the best products out there for this type of use case. We already have LTMs and to leverage GTM on top of that is just a piece of cake. Everything is so well integrated its amazing.
