Overall Satisfaction with Fortinet FortiGate

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use our Fortinet FortiGate to control all traffic on and off our campus. It solves issue we have with knowing what connections are being made to our critical resources and secures them. We enable Intrusion Detection, Anti-Virus, DNS sink holing and web filtering. We feel be using all these protections our business has a good base level of security.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Firewall rules are easy to manage and control
Intrusion Detection works well.
Anti-Virus protection gives us a good extra protection layer.

Cons

Logging, We previously used a Palo Alto which was much easier to view log details quickly.
More intuitive interface. Coming from Palo Alto it's not as intuitive.
Speed, sometimes when we run certain functions there is to much lag

Return on Investment

Reduced the cost of our firewalls by 10%
Our Maintenace cost was lowered by 15%

Usability

I like everything about the firewall other than logging. I would have given it a 10 if the firewall logs were easier to use and more intuitive.

Alternatives Considered

Palo Alto Networks Advanced Threat Prevention, CheckPoint and Juniper SRX

Better than Juniper, and CheckPoint. Not as good as the Palo Alto although it cost less so I would still make the choice to go with Fortinet

Likelihood to Recommend

Works great as a base level firewall. Checks all the basic boxes for creating rules and protecting critical assets. Intrusion detection and anti-virus also work well. It is not a great product for getting quick access to detailed logs in a quick timeframe. I found the filtering aspect of logs to be lacking an intuitive quick interface.
