Freckle Is So Helpful
Overall Satisfaction with Freckle by Renaissance
I am a Title 1 reading teacher and Dyslexia Specialist. I love that I can create my own classes with the particular students that I serve. In one class I have students ranging from 6th grade to 2nd grade. I am able to assign lessons based on their needs. For instance, a student in 6th grade may need help with comprehension whereas my 2nd-grade student needs more help in foundation reading skills. These students are only with me for about an hour a day, but I can assign lessons that they are able to accomplish anywhere. Upon completion of their assignments, I am able to see how well they are accomplishing their tasks. With this information, I can determine whether I need to continue teaching a particular skill. Freckle is very useful. Several of our teachers have used it in the past or are still using it presently.
Pros
- Freckle offers ELA lessons for all skills from foundational to comprehension and higher-level thinking skills.
- The reports are very easy to read and show specific areas of success or need.
- Freckle is very useful when teachers need to assign lessons for Alternate Methods of Teaching (AMI) days.
- I love the simplicity of Freckle. The site is easy to use and navigate. Setting up my classes was an easy task.
Cons
- My students get bored with just answering questions the whole time. They complain about having to get on to Freckle.
- I would like to see open ended or open response questions.
- I would like for Freckle to be able to assess fluency.
- Freckle has been an asset by allowing me one more resource to use while trying to teach my students certain skills. I have been using it as a source for my students to practice skills in an attempt to strengthen their reading abilities.
- Freckle is an asset to our entire school. By teaching my students how to read more effectively while using Freckle to strengthen their reading abilities, students become more successful in every area of education.
- As students become better readers they tend to be more successful on the state test at the end of the year. Freckle plays a part in our success as a school. We tend to do well in our state. We were rated in the top 10 schools within our region. This is important in the financial stability of our school as it plays a part in our funding.
I liked Khan Academy and the students liked doing the activities. I liked that I could assign lessons for specific skills based on the area of need. Khan Academy does not have free access. I like that Freckle allows me to get on and really use it so I can see if it will be a good fit for my students. Khan Academy seemed like a fair price. In comparison, they both offer lessons in all area domains. Khan Academy is more interactive as the students had to drag letters to match sounds whereas Freckle is more of a multiple-choice assessment. I cannot determine one factor that drew me to Freckle, but probably the biggest reason I am using Freckle over Khan Academy is that I can use it for free while determining whether I want to continue on with the premium subscription.
