Overall Satisfaction with GitLab

GitLab is being used as a code repository, CI/CD pipeline and source of truth for our infrastructure as code configurations. It allows us to have version control on code, review & approve changes, and also create pipelines to test and deploy our changes over the different environments we use.
  • CI/CD
  • Version control
  • Permissions
  • Viewing billing and account status is confusing and has to be linked to a named account.
  • Significantly sped up our deployment to the cloud.
  • There is an audit trail of all changes to production.
  • More departments in the business are now looking to work with GitLab.
The choice was between GitLab and GitHub. We decided to use GitLab as other sister companies were also using GitLab, so there was the possibility of knowledge transfer and we can all align on one version control tool to use.
We have not used any of the security features in GitLab.
Yes, it has. We can now all work together on the same code base and also using pipelines that have been created, we can validate the code before it is released to make sure there are no errors anywhere. Adding this extra validation step has been invaluable to our production environment.

GitLab is suited to many environments, large or small, because of the pricing model.
There is a free tier which can be used for small businesses without the budget to pay for more features. Even for 5-10 users on the premium tier it is not particularly expensive for all the features you receive.
I would recommend it to anyone needing a solid CI/CD, version control tool.
