Overall Satisfaction with IBM AIX
We've been using IBM AIX servers running Oracle databases. These include small to very large databases running business-critical systems.
Pros
- Reliable servers
- Excellent performance
- Fully supported for all versions of Oracle
Cons
- Proprietary IBM AIX multi-threaded architecture makes it difficult to estimate required CPU power for new systems
- Would help if AIX shell command set would be 100% compatible with Linux
- Some of the performance metrics seem proprietary to AIX, and it would be good if this was more standard and closer to Linux
- Large clusters
- Virtualization
- Performance
- With proper capacity planning, a good ROI can be achieved when using large servers partitioned into multiple virtual servers
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
We used both types of servers: IBM AIX and Linux (RHEL). I think IBM AIX has an advantage when using large servers with virtualization.
