Overall Satisfaction with IBM Apptio

We at Enbridge primarily use IBM Apptio to arrive at the service costing for all business units. Many of our stakeholders use it for other purposes that include tracking variances in actuals, Budget & Forecast over time- (at all levels - BU, Services, Applications, IT Towers and GL), Preparing Forecast Plans using actuals, measuring Application TCO, measuring & taking action on orphan infrastructure, etc.,

Pros

  • Creating model allocations is simple. Also, model visualization in the form of Sankey diagrams help
  • Formulas are simple as they are similar to those used in Excel
  • Process to move the changes to Production (through the use of Dev, Staging workspaces) is simple & clear
  • Insightful Out of the box reports help us as they solve most of our use cases

Cons

  • Just like how we can create views on reports, may be similar thing can be developed on individual tables for different users (or) at least enable users to view certain columns to be visible for at least 1/2 days. This will help us during month end process because, the tables get refreshed automatically after some time and they show up all columns. So, we need to do the manual exercise to hide unnecessary columns while performing our monthly process
  • Sometimes, the order of columns get changed in report tables once we add new columns even though we use freeze columns option.
  • Don't allow creation of multiple perspectives with same name. This becomes a problem while performing troubleshooting / analyzing how a particular report is built
  • Helped us to significantly achieve cost savings on our infrastructure
  • Helped us to measure the Application TCO
  • Reduced our forecasting cycles
We use Datalink and Datalink classic to ingest data from ServiceNow and Apptio Cloudability into IBM Apptio. We also use Datalink to push App TCO data from IBM Apptio into LeanIX for assessment and recommendation purposes.
We use IT Planning module for accelerated budgeting and forecasting
Sometimes the responses they provide, really don't add any value& they seem to be like just an acknowledgement & running the show.
Also, the customer support team should have support lines in every region. Right now, we can reach them on phone only on the US region .



  • IBM Cloudability
It is really a good experience when we use multiple Apptio products together. In our organization, we use IBM Apptio and IBM Cloudability. We transfer data between these tools using data ingestion tools - Datalink and Datalink (Classic)
Since each product serves different purpose and we have single POC (in the form of CSM), he/she is having a comprehensive idea of our Account, which makes it easy for us to connect for any Apptio related issue

LeanIX Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM), ServiceNow IT Operations Management
Very useful for mid / large size enterprises having considerable IT Spend and are looking to achieve significant cost savings in 12-24 months

Not useful for small enterprise / ones with very less IT spend, since Apptio license and cost of implementation is expensive.
