Overall Satisfaction with IBM Apptio

I use Apptio to track and manage monthly budget forecasts. I am able to capture my primary investments in the tool and assign all of the labor and non-labor resources to the investments. I am able to make changes as frequently as needed and always have a current picture of my forecast outlook.

Pros

  • The graphic visualizations are very intuitive.

  • I am able to maintain a current and accurate forecast

Cons

  • Navigating the different perspectives is a little unwieldy at times.
  • Capturing non-labor (vendor) resources in a similar way as labor resources is confusing.
  • We have been able to align on strategies.
  • We have established a more repeatable and anticipative forecast.
  • We are able to be more strategic in planning for future budgets.
We take advantage of both ingestion of data into Apptio from external systems as well exporting or extracting data for downstream uses. We have investment management systems where we define work and associate budgets. This information is ingested into Apptio for use in building forecasts. We have forecasting reports into which we represent exported Apptio data. Being able to manage resources in both dollars and hours has been helpful.
I have not been directly involved with the post sales support team. However, that team has provided training materials and recommended practices that have been very helpful in coming up to speed on how to more fully use the product. My understanding from both vendor management and our upline stakeholders is that our relationship with Apptio is strong.
We use Workfront and Apptio for different use cases, but they work complimentarily with each other in our downstream reporting.

Apptio is well suited for forecast management at the enterprise level, representing multiple IT portfolios. While I am not as familiar with it, the enterprise roll-up features are very capable of painting a story for executive stakeholders. I like the way that the use of the application drives common strategic conversations in my organization.
