Overall Satisfaction with IBM Apptio

We use Apptio One with Planning and Cost Transparency. We use it for the IT budget for both direct and chargeback costs. We leverage it for reporting and forecasting IT expenses.

Pros

  • Planning is intuitive and allows for easy budgeting
  • TBM Studio allows us to build tables and do things quickly behind the scenes
  • Cost Transparency enables visibility to the business on what costs they are incurring

Cons

  • User Interface could be improved
  • Drilling down into budget line items in Planning takes time and multiple clicks
User interface could be a lot better.
  • Apptio has enabled great relationships between IT, Finance and the business units/shared services.
  • The business units and SSUs have much better visibility into what their technology costs are
  • Decisions behind tech investments are easier with the budgeting tool Apptio provides
We use forecasting for the IT direct budget and it has allowed us to hold IT accountable regarding variances throughout the year. We utilize Cost Transparency heavily to provide the business units with insight into their IT chargeback expenses.
Our Apptio reps check in with us often to gauge how our Apptio environment is doing. We have however had lapses in servicing where the site goes down for short periods of time where we did not receive any alerts from Apptio.

It works really well for IT budgeting direct expenses. Cost Transparency could provide better reporting with details for all expenses. A lot of the time, the reports need to be drastically cleaned up and formatted.
