IBM Power9 is currently being used in a test environment using a Linux on Power workload to test out open source DB offerings.

Pros

  • Performance over Power8
  • Performance over x86
  • Memory bandwidth on Power9 compared to x86 for in-memory database testing e.g redis

Cons

  • Enterprise pools
  • Licensing costs
  • Reduced footprint and workload consolidation
Power9 seems to be well suited for open source databases for significant cost savings over traditional database licenses
