Overall Satisfaction with IBM Storage FlashSystem

We use IBM Storage FlashSystem 9500 for our mission critical ERP SAP Landscape. It addresses the main issue of latency as it sustains sub-millisecond response times for our massive OLTP/OLAP Oracle Database which has grown over the years to +-40TB. The main feature we use and love is the Advanced Copy Services made possible by a very smart new feature called Policy-Based Replication. With this we clone our Production data every 2 weeks(planned) and on-demand with no performance degradation on Live Hosts. It's very intuitive and simple to use GUI helps us achieve our objectives instantly as the learning curve is very minimal. The powerful CLI helps us automate with shell scripts and/or Ansible which make Operational efficiency a breeze as we now have our SAP developers and Basis doing their own refreshes at the click of a button. Finally the system is so robust and highly available, very fault tolerant and even when a bug is detected it is self-healing and off course fixes and patching has never let us down as it deploys seamlessly.

Pros

  • Data Replication over long distances using Policy-Based Replication and maintaining the RPO.
  • We use snapshot technology heavily and these snaps are easy to create/automate and instantly available.
  • Upgrades/Updates are deployed to the system without loss of data or services.
  • Sub-millisecond latency is maintained and spikes are handled and absorbed by the system during peaks.
  • When connected to the internet via Storage Insights and Cloud Call Home it makes for proactive problem alerting, monitoring and resolution.
  • The fact that Replication and snapshot stuff are hidden under the covers and we no longer have to create mirror pairs or flashcopy pairs ourselves. It does it within the cluster or partnership.

Cons

  • Definitely we need to be able to extend a volume that is part of a mirror pair or Policy-Based Replication(PBO) on the fly.
  • Expansion of mirrored volumes/volume groups should resynchronise only the changed data (Almost like making use of change-volumes) and not trigger a full resync.
  • Please allow us to select downloading drive microcode also from Fix Central directly onto the flashsystem like with updates.
  • 2:1 Data Reduction
  • 6:1 Total Savings
  • Time savings from 48 hours for SAP refreshes to minutes
  • Time savings from days for provisioning to minutes using Ansible and PowerVC
  • Uptime has gone from 2-3 outages a year to 1(These are known and unknown bugs)
Volume Groups, Volume Group Snapshots, Policy-Based Replication, Provisioning Policies, Upload software to ECUREP, Download software from Fix Central, Cloud Call Home, Remote Support, Remote Code Load and all the autoprovisioning and automatic configuration that the FS9500 does for you under the covers. These are time consuming actions Storage admins had to do in the past.
It allows us to do seamless firmware upgrades. We do not need to worry about missing out LUNs that have been added to a Host later but are not replicated since Volume Groups take care of this for us automatically. Restore a snapshot by a click of a button in v8.7. It takes care of the autoprovisioning and automatic configuration especially in the case of mirroring.
IBM Storage FlashSystem is just a all-in-one system feature rich with capabilities and years of design and fine tuning. There is no comparison as it won't be comparing apples with apples. IBM Storage FlashSystem has just been remodeled from the ground up and is a completely different product altogether.
